The Colorado Buffaloes can't quite put everything together this season. Deion Sanders has tried to reinvent a system that hasn't worked.
Colorado quarterback Isaac Wilson has a shade under 1,000 yards in only four starts. Which came after Julian Lewis had almost 800 yards and six touchdowns before his benching. Wide receiver Joseph Williams has 643 yards and 5 touchdowns, which should put him in the top 20 in the country after this week’s games are tallied. On defense, Lamont Lester Jr has five sacks and at times can't be blocked. Not to mention Boo Carter, Cree Thomas and Randon Fontenette form a noteworthy secondary.
Despite the statistical positives and stretches of good play, this team has lost five straight. Only two of those five losses came with a deficit of ten points or fewer. In the loss to Texas Tech, the defense inexplicably held a typically powerful team to a 7-3 lead for a half. Then the Red Raiders started looking like themselves. The other two games, Northwestern and Oklahoma State, were not remotely close.
Former Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston carries a sort of reputation in the NFL. Fans of teams he’s played for call it “the full Jameis”. The idea being he will give quality quarterback play, get chunk yards, make heroic plays, but the full Jameis includes at least one bad turnover and questionable decisions. The combination of all those things in the same game, gives you “the full Jameis”.
The combined results and ways to lose against Texas Tech, Utah and now Oklahoma State seem to feel like “the full Colorado”. A good start followed by a bad finish, a bad finish followed by a valiant effort, big plays negated by penalties, chunk plays followed by almost impossible turnovers. Good, bad and avoidable, leading to a string of losses.
The remaining schedule is not daunting, but the list of aspects to be optimistic about is diminishing. There isn’t a game left that should feel like a predictable win. The Buffs will face Kansas State and Arizona State on the road before taking on No. 14 Houston. They will finish the season against a Cincinnati team that just beat undefeated Texas Tech and a UCF team that just took down No. 2 BYU.
There can only be one more loss if Colorado were to make a bowl game at this point. However, the chances of that happening don't look good right now. The Buffs don't have enough depth on both sides of the ball and it's starting to show.
