While some in the sports world predicted that the No. 14 Houston Cougars would beat the No. 10 Utah football team, the Utes had something to say about the notion, winning the ranked matchup on Saturday night, 21-13. As Utah football head coach Morgan Scalley led the way for the win, he and quarterback Devon Dampier took the time to call out their doubters.
The Utes would come back after trailing 10-0, keeping their undefeated streak alive and holding the top spot in the Big 12, as Dampier had an up-and-down game, throwing for 204 yards and two interceptions. Still, Dampier would lead the program to three pivotal touchdown drives to win the game, with him saying after the game that he believes the Utes were “written off by a lot of people.”
“I think we were written off by a lot of people — I guess that’s a respectful way to say it. We definitely felt that, we definitely came out here, and it was the game we had to prove ourselves, we knew what situation we were in,” Dampier said, via Josh Furlong.

Regarding the doubt that the football team had faced, Scalley would also reveal that the players had heard that “Utah hasn’t played anybody” and “Houston’s gonna get them,” via Furlong.
Utah football’s Morgan Scalley is a “little emotional”
With the Utah football team using the fuel from the outside, Scalley was said to be a “little emotional” talking about the “fight” from the team.
“That’s what you need. I don’t really care about the stats. I’m so proud of these guys, just their fight. Devon Dampier, he’s our guy. So proud of his fight in the second half, and the defense came up with stop after stop,” Scalley said, via the school.
“We knew coming in that this was going to be a big time matchup…We’re going to enjoy this win tonight, but we have to go 1-0 next week,” Scalley continued. “This is a great one, but it’s one, and we can only celebrate for so long.”
The Utah Utes look to stay undefeated as they next face the Cincinnati on Oct. 31.
