Texas A&M will hit the road to take on No. 14 Missouri on Saturday afternoon, facing the Tigers in Columbia for the second straight season after defeating their SEC counterpart 38-17 this time last year. However, transfer quarterback Austin Simmons, who threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns during the Tigers' 45-17 blowout win over Florida, looks like a potential Heisman candidate through five games.
Still, Texas A&M's 34-7 win over Arkansas last Saturday showed all of us that third-year coach Mike Elko and his roster aren't giving up after falling to Kentucky and LSU in back-to-back weeks, hoping that the improved offensive line play, which led to the Aggies averaging nearly six yards per carry when running to the right side against the Razorbacks, continues into Saturday's early kickoff.
However, starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who has struggled in the pocket, looked above average, completing 13/19 for 170 with 66 rush yards and a touchdown against Arkansas, but still struggled with accuracy, especially on deep ball attempts. If Reed can hit his high-percentage throws, combined with a steady run game, Texas A&M's offense has a chance to score 20-plus points against the Tigers.
The Aggies' defense must pressure Austin Simmons into quick decisions, which will likely require Elko to unleash the blitz on most third-down looks. If Texas A&M's secondary can prevent explosive plays, the Aggies have a shot at an upset.
I'm not the only one who believes this: two of the three SEC Unfiltered hosts think Texas A&M will beat Missouri, while Cole Thompson is all in on Missouri covering the spread and winning comfortably. Texas A&M will face Missouri on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., and the game will air on ABC.
