Oklahoma football welcomed the Kentucky Wildcats to Norman, Oklahoma in a sneaky-tough game that came after coach Brent Venables was patted on the back for his win over Texas. Oklahoma legend Gerald McCoy was among those trolling the Longhorns after the Sooners’ big win, but the tables turned against Kentucky as quarterback John Mateer made another egregious error.

Mateer’s Sooners trailed by one point with 1:25 left on the clock on their side of the field. Mateer took a deep drop, looked over the middle and threw it late into double coverage as Jordan Castell made an interception that he returned for a touchdown, extending the Wildcats’ late lead to 21-13.

The Wildcats held on for a 21-13 victory in hostile territory, sending Mateer and Venables’ team to 3-3 and likely ending their College Football Playoff hopes. It was a bitter pill for Mateer and the Sooners to swallow, one week after their biggest win of the season. Kentucky scored 14 fourth quarter points to steal the win, shocking the Vegas oddsmakers on a day when they recorded less than 250 yards.

Mateer, who’s been blasted by Skip Bayless for his recent mistakes, ended up with 270 yards passing and a touchdown, but three interceptions continued his startling trend of being careless with the football in the worst possible moments.

The Sooners got nearly 200 yards rushing combined from Isaiah Sategna III and Manny Choice, but couldn’t cash in with points. Mateer’s job seemed safe after the Texas upset, but now appears on shaky ground once again as the Sooners will look to turn the page against Mississippi State in Week 8.
