There were a whole lot of upsets in college football on Saturday.
No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Alabama, and No. 7 Texas all lost. While the Hoosiers were technically underdogs in their matchup against No. 4 Ohio State, and Bama and Notre Dame were both up against ranked opponents, seeing five of the top seven teams in college football eat a loss on the same day was fantastic.
But it could have been better, as unranked Florida State came within inches of taking down No. 3 Miami to complete the sea of carnage that we saw on Saturday. The Seminoles had kept things close with the Hurricanes all night, and forced overtime with a 75-yard touchdown with two minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime, and Miami scored first in the second overtime, adding the two-point conversion on top for good measure. Florida State had its back against the wall, with a sack and a false start pushing them back to the Miami 36-yard line while facing fourth-and-21.
But on the final, desperate play, quarterback Ashton Daniels found receiver Micahi Danzy in the end zone… only to see the play called back due to a holding penalty.
But then, facing fourth-and-31, on another final, desperate play, Daniels appeared to connect with receiver Duce Robinson in the end zone. Robinson got his hands on the ball in the end zone first, and the ball never touched the ground.
Unfortunately for the Noles, the play was ruled an interception on the field once the officials sorted through the mess of bodies, and a trip to the ACC replay center showed that they had made the right call.

While the ultimate result is a disappointment to college football fans who were hoping for one more taste of chaos on an already chaotic day, the look inside the review process this time worked as intended. Both players had hands on the ball, but by the ruling of the officials, the defender who jumped over Robinson’s back was able to wrangle it away enough to claim possession. At the very least, there wasn’t enough to overturn the call of an interception on the field.
On the plus side, we got what appears to have been the right call in an important spot, and we got a look inside the review process that made clear what the conversation around the ruling was and which aspects of the play were factors in the decision. On the down side, man that would have been a cool touchdown.
Still, moments like this prove that the looks we’ve started to get inside replay reviews can have some utility. They also make it clear that we really should have had this for the Michigan vs. Western Michigan game earlier this year.
