Multiple football players at San Diego State have been ruled out of their game against Texas State after contracting the mumps.
The mumps are a contagious disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control, that causes pain and swelling in the salivary glands near the ears and jaw. As of Sept. 10, there were 157 outbreak cases across 31 states, including 25 in California.
The outbreak was first discovered at the university on Sept. 18 when the university confirmed three cases of mumps and two additional possible cases. All five cases were connected to the same team. The university said players were rid of the contagious infection.
Instead, it's the third-consecutive week that the San Diego State football program will have multiple players out with the viral infection.
The San Diego State Aztecs have a 1-3 overall record as they enter their matchup against the Texas State Bobcats who have a .500 record at 2-2. Their game is being held at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego on Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. PT.

How many San Diego State football players have mumps?
The San Diego Tribune-Union reported that nearly three dozen players were listed on the football team's availability report on Wednesday night.
However, there were 17 players listed as "doubtful" or "out" due to the virus and other injuries and 10 of them are starters on the team, ESPN reported.
"The football gods have not really favored us with the injury luck," San Diego State coach Sean Lewis told reporters Wednesday. "Guys have got to be ready to step into the light when the time comes. … We've been given a nice storm here. But this too shall pass, and we've got to be able to see our way through it."
