The Florida Gators scored a major recruiting victory by flipping five-star wide receiver Easton Royal from Texas on Sunday. Head coach Jon Sumrall's inaugural recruiting class gets a major boost while delivering a significant blow to the Longhorns' 2027 plans. The Royal family confirmed the decision to ESPN on Sunday.
The 6-foot, 205-pound prospect from New Orleans ranks as the nation's No. 1 wide receiver and No. 8 overall recruit in the SC Next ESPN 300. He initially committed to Texas last November, becoming the first player in the Longhorns' 2027 recruiting class. The decision followed Royal's latest visit to Florida, which came during the Gators' 38-19 loss to South Carolina on Saturday.
After months of interest from several SEC powerhouse programs, Royal is expected to cancel his scheduled visits to Texas and LSU and shut down his recruitment. Sumrall's longstanding relationship with Royal played a crucial role in the flip. He first offered Royal while coaching at Tulane in March 2025 and continued pursuing him after taking over at Florida late last year.
Royal previously praised Sumrall's achievements, saying he viewed the coach as a winner following his success at Tulane. That relationship ultimately helped Florida overcome competing offers and secure one of the country's most coveted prospects.
He becomes Florida's second highest-rated recruit in the 2027 class, joining five-star offensive tackle Maxwell Hiller, who is ranked No. 7 nationally, and quarterback Davin Davidson, ESPN's No. 6 pocket passer.
Florida entered Saturday with the nation's No. 8 recruiting class. If Royal signs in December, he would represent the program's highest-ranked wide receiver addition since Percy Harvin in 2006. The Louisiana native brings exceptional athleticism and production. He recorded 2,095 all-purpose yards and 29 total touchdowns during his junior season.
In May, he also won a state championship and set a Louisiana record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.17 seconds, breaking a mark that had stood for 46 years.
Royal's flip could reshape the 2027 recruiting race while adding renewed momentum in "The Swamp" despite consecutive losses.
