Why Michigan superfan Dave Portnoy doesn’t have Bryce Underwood ‘buyer’s remorse’ despite struggles appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Michigan football has dropped two straight games, losing to Iowa and then to Minnesota this past weekend. Bryce Underwood struggled in the loss to Minnesota, completing just ten of 21 passes and throwing two interceptions. This has led to fans of Michigan being ready to pull the plug on Underwood as the starter.
Underwood is in his sophomore season with Michigan after being a top recruit. One of the major players in bringing Underwood to Michigan was Barstool president and Michigan fan Dave Portnoy. He helped with the NIL funding to secure Underwood and is now being asked whether he has buyer’s remorse over bringing the quarterback in, per Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports.
” No, I mean, we wish we were playing better. College sports is basically professional sports now. You sign people to contracts and they don’t always work out the way you want. Certainly, this season hasn’t started the way Michigan would like,” Portnoy said. “But, he was the No. 1 recruit in the country. You certainly can’t blame it all on him. He’s not playing great, but nobody’s playing great. But I don’t look at it that way with buyer’s remorse.”

Underwood has dealt with a difficult situation overall. During his recruitment, Michigan was winning a national title in 2023. Then Jim Harbaugh was gone, and Sherrone Moore came in. After Moore’s second season, he was fired due to inappropriate relationships with a staff member. Now, he is in his second season, and under a new offense, he has struggled.
This year, Underwood has completed just 67 of 113 passes for 881 yards with five touchdowns. He has also thrown four interceptions. Meanwhile, he has two touchdowns on the ground.
Adding pressure to Underwood is the backup quarterback. Tommy Carr was not the same level of recruit that Underwood was, but he carries a gravitas that is hard to ignore. His brother, CJ Carr, is projected as a top pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and has been dominant at Notre Dame. Meanwhile, his grandfather is Lloyd Carr. Carr was an assistant coach at Michigan from 1980 through 1994. Carr was then the head coach from 1995 through 2007, going 122-40 and winning a national championship.
With Carr as the head coach, they won five conference titles and never missed a bowl game. With Michigan struggling, the idea of having a Carr step in to save the season would be very attractive.
Michigan is 3-2 this year and has an off week to make changes. They will face Penn State on October 17.
