Penn State played Friday night. You watched it and didn’t have fun. But there were other games, some just as bad, this weekend. Here’s what happened around the conference this past weekend.
Best Win of the Week: Purdue wins a P4 game
The Boilermakers had not won a game against a conference team, or even a Power Four conference team, since knocking off Indiana to close out the 2023 season. Purdue is still a longshot to make a bowl game, but Barry Odom’s team looks decidedly better in 2025 and they controlled Saturday’s win against Illinois in Champaign.
Worst Loss of the Week: Michigan falls on the road
The Wolverines had not lost in Minneapolis since 1977. In a game with offense befitting of that era, they were outscored 13-0 in the second half and finished with just 180 total yards. Minnesota coach PJ Fleck called it one of the great moments of his life, so we’ll say it must be that bad for Michigan and first-year coach Kyle Whittingham.
Offensive Player of the Week: Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State
He’s now the odds on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and Saturday will certainly show up in any highlight film. Smith continues to rewrite the Buckeye receiving record book and he had 11 catches for 206 yards and two scores as Ohio State dominated Iowa in Iowa City.
Offensive Players of the Week: Indiana’s Output
Skipping the defensive player of the week honors this time around to highlight another outstanding offensive performance on Saturday night. With the “it was against Rutgers” caveat, the Hoosiers had two running backs (Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe, Jr.) go over 100 yards, while also having two receivers (Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh) have more than 100 yards receiving. Oh, they all had touchdowns, too.
Offensive Play of the Week: Colton Joselph, Wisconsin
The Badgers backed up their road win at Beaver Stadium with an easy home victory against Michigan State. Colton Joseph helped ice the game with this quarterback run.
Defensive Play of the Week: USC Gets Go Ahead Scoop and Score
Things were looking a little iffy for the Trojans at home on Saturday night until they came up with this big play to take the lead.
Most Big Ten Moment of the Week: Maryland Collapses in Second Half
Early, it looked like old school September Maryland had returned. The Terps were looking good early as they built a lead against unbeaten Nebraska in Lincoln. Then, just like things usually do during the latter half of the season, things came apart during the latter part of the game against the Huskers. Maryland was outscored 34-0 in the last two and a half quarters.
Most Big Ten West Moment of the Week: Kicking Michigan While They’re Down
The Wolverines have lost back-to-back games to the old Big Ten West (ok, so has another team that we follow closely around these parts). Minnesota was maybe a little too fired up.
Most Iowa Moment of the Week: Quarterback injuries?
The Hawkeyes were unbeaten headed into their loss against Ohio State. Now, could the Hawkeyes be dealing with some quarterback injuries?
What We’re Looking Forward to the Most: Whiteout?
Remember the build up to last year’s Whiteout? Wasn’t that fun? Maybe this time the game will be fun?
