The Utah Utes are coming off a bye week with a set of favorable contests over the next two weeks. First up, the Kansas Jayhawks come to Salt Lake City for the first time since 1996. While this would be a much better basketball matchup for the Rock Chalk crew, they'll try to upset the Utes after the week off.
After Kansas, Utah heads across the front range to face Deion Sanders in the Colorado Buffaloes. All the hype that Coach Prime brought to college football four years ago has nearly died off. The latest edition of the Rumble and the Rockies will be interesting. This is due to the former Utah quarterback Isaac Wilson possibly starting under center against the Utes.
The brother of former BYU and current New Orleans Saints quarterback Zach Wilson got the nod this past weekend against No. 12 Texas Tech. However, he struggled to move the ball consistently in the final three quarters. Colorado, as a whole, has struggled to find a decent surge under new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion. The Buffs' Go-Go offense isn't well-suited for Wilson due to the fact he's not a true dual-threat quarterback.
Sanders benched former five-star quarterback Julian Lewis two weeks ago against Baylor. Since then, there has been a quarterback carousel in Boulder. Wilson was the latest to strap up and take a ride. Besides reverting to Lewis, the only option left for Coach Prime and his staff before facing Utah is to start true freshman Kaneal Sweetwyne, who is a local product from Skyridge (Lehi, UT).
Colorado is in the midst of a bye week with several things to work on. An unexpected story to pop-up after the Texas Tech loss was the news that one of the Buffs' offensive playbooks was left at a hotel bar prior to the game. To make matters worse, the plays were then compared to an online post, showing proof the information was legit.
Needless to say, going to Boulder might seem like a tune-up game for both sides for two very different reasons. Colorado is headed down the Big 12 standings, while Utah remains very dominant and in the picture for a title run.
Utah can't afford to look too far ahead, but the next two contests could be a test of the Utes' depth. Kansas comes into Rice-Eccles Stadium as one of the better defensive teams in the conference. They'll try to find ways to slow down Devon Dampier from doing what he does best, which is playing the role of conductor.
The 12th-ranked Utes will play Kansas on Saturday, October 10 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Kickoff for the rare "whiteout" game is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
