The Big 12 continues to gobble up votes from US LBM Coaches Poll voters, but do its teams deserve all that love? Also, isn’t it true that Notre Dame “ain’t played nobody!”

What business do the Irish have being ranked No. 3 after a few less-than-dominant victories?

We’re a month away from the College Football Playoff selection committee putting out its first rankings. In the meantime, the coaches poll and AP Top 25 fill the void, and their rankings include a few curious choices in the pecking order.

On this edition of “College Football Unfiltered,” a USA TODAY Sports podcast presented by Sports Seriously, host Blake Toppmeyer and his colleagues Paul Myerberg and John Brice serve up a few overrated teams in the latest coaches poll.

The conversation starts with the Big 12 and pivots to the Irish.

Which college football teams are overrated in US LBM Coaches Poll?

Myerberg: Some people would be tempted to highlight No. 5 Indiana, but I wouldn’t say that. For me, it’s any team from the Big 12 — specifically, No. 8 BYU and No. 9 Texas Tech.

Texas Tech has not looked great against a weak schedule, outside of its Houston win. As for BYU, it beat TCU 17-10. That's a scoreline from a top-10 team?

I’m not impressed with either Texas Tech or BYU. I think this is a case of voters giving them respect based more on last season.

Brice: No argument on labeling BYU overrated. The Cougars looked mediocre in that win against TCU. I’ll add a few more to the conversation: I’m underwhelmed by No. 19 Houston, and we’ve seen absolutely nothing of substance from No. 17 USC. The Trojans were fortunate to beat a Washington team that’s struggled all season.

Oh, and there’s a decent argument for Texas being overrated. It’s not that Texas isn’t good, but I don’t think Texas is the No. 1 team. I’d put Georgia in that spot right now.

Toppmeyer: James Franklin was maddening at Penn State. This is so much worse

Hot seat list: Latest intel on Shane Beamer, Bill Belichick, Dabo Swinney

Toppmeyer: BYU and Texas Tech are undefeated, but they don’t look the part of top-10 teams. Voters need to look more closely at No. 12 Utah, if they desire a Big 12 team in the top 10. Forget what happened last season, because Utah is this season’s team to beat in the Big 12.

As for Texas, the Longhorns don't consistently dazzle on the eye test, but they do possess a strong resume with wins against Ohio State and Tennessee, so I understand Texas being No. 1.

But, what has Notre Dame done to justify being ranked No. 3? Notre Dame found itself in a tussle with North Carolina in the second half. A few weeks ago, the Irish let a bad Michigan State team hang around for too long, and Notre Dame didn’t look great in the first half of a win against Wisconsin, either.

No argument that CJ Carr is really good, and the run game stepped up against UNC, but I’d have teams like Miami, Alabama and Ohio State ahead of the Irish, based on what we’ve seen so far.

Hot seat finds Shane Beamer … but what about Dabo Swinney

∎ Shane Beamer has mastered the art of the come-from-ahead loss. He pulled it off again by blowing a 17-point lead against Kentucky. Toppmeyer describes Beamer as being a “practice” coach, and that’s not going to cut it. Brice labels the temperature around Beamer as “an inferno.”

∎ It’s not quite that hot on Dabo Swinney at Clemson, but it’s heating up. For a deeper hot seat conversation, listen in to "College Football Unfiltered."
