The BYU Cougars football program might be down a few stars to injuries in Saturday’s 17-10 win over TCU.
Running back LJ Martin left with an apparent right ankle injury, and linebacker Isaiah Glasker exited after taking a hit during an interception return. Sources say he suffered a hip injury. Both players were ruled out at halftime, according to the ESPN broadcast.
Martin had two carries for 16 yards before leaving the game. Last year's Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year walked off the field and went immediately into the blue medical tent. He came out with BYU's trainers and never re-entered the game. There was no clear indication of how severe the injury was for Martin. BYU’s leading rusher this season has 42 carries for 328 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Glasker left the game after taking a hit during safety Faletau Satuala’s interception return. Like Martin, he immediately entered the medical tent before sitting on the bench. Glasker has 13 total tackles this season and was an All-Big 12 selection.
Without Martin, the Cougars’ offense isn't one-dimensional, but he's the best rusher with a majority of his yards coming after contact. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw for just 62 yards. This was the second time in the past decade BYU won a game throwing for under 100 yards. But he got it done with his legs.
Bachmeier had 66 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a 21-yard scoring run with 2:06 remaining that gave the Cougars a 17-7 lead.
BYU moved to 4-0 on the season. Kalani Sitake's team returns to Provo with a short week ahead of them. Iowa State is next up with a Friday night affair on deck. It's the start of a two-game home stand with No. 3 Notre Dame on the backend. The projected top 10 battle between the Cougars and Fighting Irish could bring a ton of national interest to Provo. ESPN College GameDay has been rumored to have interest in heading West, but nothing has been announced.
Notre Dame faces Stanford on Saturday before facing their toughest opponent thus far. Marcus Freeman's team outpaced Bill Belichick and North Carolina for a 37-26 win in Chapel Hill. We'll find out the kickoff time and TV assignment for BYU's game with Notre Dame.
Don't be surprised if this one goes to ABC or FOX in Prime time. Regardless of when or the TV network, this will be one of the best college football games this season.
