Texas Tech football is undefeated, ranked No. 8 nationally and looking increasingly like a legitimate College Football Playoff contender.
But Saturday's trip to Cincinnati presents the kind of dangerous road test that can quickly derail a promising season.

Joey McGuire's Red Raiders (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) face Cincinnati (4-2, 1-2) at 11 a.m. CT on FS1, hoping to extend their unbeaten start while managing several potentially significant offensive injuries.
Texas Tech enters with considerable momentum following a 53-25 demolition of Arizona State.
The Red Raiders scored 43 first-half points and rolled up 404 yards before halftime, their most explosive opening half in nearly a decade.
Quarterback Will Hammond continues growing into his role as the leader of an offense that's becoming increasingly difficult to defend.
With playmakers Kenny Johnson, Coy Eakin and Terrance Carter Jr. available in the passing game, Tech has multiple ways to attack Cincinnati's defense.
The injury situation, however, deserves attention.
Running back Cameron Dickey remains sidelined with an ankle injury, leaving J'Koby Williams and Quinten Joyner among the backs carrying the rushing responsibilities.
Wide receiver Donte Lee Jr. is reportedly out for the season with a torn ACL, while Jalen Jones is questionable with an undisclosed injury. Those losses could test Tech's receiving depth as the schedule becomes more demanding.
Cincinnati also has health concerns. Running back Gi'Bran Payne and tight end De'Meiko Witherspoon have been listed as questionable, potentially creating additional responsibilities for Cole Tabb and the Bearcats' other offensive weapons.
But overlooking Cincinnati would be a serious mistake.
Quarterback JC French IV is coming off a career-best 389 passing yards in a 45-42 loss at West Virginia. French completed 22 of 30 attempts with three touchdowns and no interceptions, demonstrating the kind of efficiency capable of challenging even elite defenses.
Tabb added 118 rushing yards against the Mountaineers, while receiver Malachi Henry produced 128 yards on just two catches.
Texas Tech's defense will be tested.
The Red Raiders have forced 12 turnovers this season, including four returned for touchdowns. McGuire's aggressive approach has consistently created opportunities for his offense, but French has yet to throw an interception in 153 attempts.
That makes Saturday's turnover battle especially intriguing.
Tech must also slow a Cincinnati rushing attack averaging 231.2 yards per game. The Red Raiders counter with a defense surrendering just 82 rushing yards per contest.
The matchup carries historical significance, too. Texas Tech hasn't opened a season 7-0 since 2013, and another victory would keep the Red Raiders firmly positioned in the Big 12 championship race.
There's also unfinished business from last season, when Tech's undefeated start ended in its seventh game.
Cincinnati will celebrate its 100th Homecoming, adding another emotional element to an already difficult road environment.
For McGuire's team, the formula is straightforward: protect Hammond, establish the running game and force French into uncomfortable situations.

Texas Tech has the talent to remain undefeated.
Now the Red Raiders must prove they can handle the expectations that come with it.
