No. 16 Tennessee football plays No. 7 Kentucky at Neyland Stadium on Nov. 7 with College Football Playoff implications in the balance.

The Vols (6-2, 3-2 SEC) will don all-black uniforms to defend their home turf in their annual "dark mode" game. The Wildcats (7-1, 5-1) are looking for their first win in the border rivalry since 2020, the year before UT hired coach Josh Heupel. They are riding a six-game winning streak, the longest in the SEC.

Kickoff is slated for 6:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.

A College Football Playoff shake-up is in store after this weekend of pivotal games. Kentucky is ranked No. 6 in the CFP poll and projected to make the playoff. Tennessee is ranked No. 13 and needs to win this game to jump into the 12-team bracket.

Dejuan Lane intercepts Kenny Minchey for rare Kentucky turnover

Kenny Minchey entered tonight's game having not thrown an interception in 200 pass attempts. Kentucky hadn't turned the ball over in five games.

But Tennessee DB Dejuan Lane intercepted a pass from Minchey in the end zone after Minchey overthrew his receiver deep downfield.

Both teams punted on their opening drives.

How Tennessee players talk about George MacIntyre as starting QB

05:45 PM ET, November 7 2026, Adam Sparks

Tennessee players talk about George MacIntyre as if he's the established starting quarterback even if coach Josh Heupel hasn’t taken that step publicly.

“Obviously, (MacIntyre) took the role over, and he’s been playing his butt off,” wide receiver Braylon Staley said on Nov. 2. “He’s grown a lot. He’s taken control of the offense now, being the leader that he’s supposed to be.”

Those are encouraging words and raise eyebrows when contrasted with Heupel, who has declined to publicly name his starting quarterback for the past five weeks.

Here's what Tennessee players said about MacIntyre.

Adams: Josh Heupel's quarterback game slights George MacIntyre

05:30 PM ET, November 7 2026, John Adams

Tennessee will play Kentucky tonight, but UT coach Josh Heupel is also concerned with another game.

It’s the quarterback game. Heupel has played it every week since George MacIntyre replaced Faizon Brandon as his starting quarterback. He still hasn't publicly recognized MacIntyre as the starter.

Never mind MacIntyre has started the past three games, or that he came off the bench to save the Vols against Auburn after Brandon played as bad of a first half as you will ever see from an SEC quarterback. MacIntyre remains a fill-in, almost as though Heupel is ashamed to proclaim him as his starter.

Why Jim Knowles' three games against Will Stein matter in Tennessee vs Kentucky

05:15 PM ET, November 7 2026, Adam Sparks

Kentucky coach Will Stein said Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is “one of the elite defensive minds in college football,” and he should know.

This will be the fourth head-to-head matchup between Stein and Knowles in the past three seasons. Stein was Oregon’s offensive coordinator in 2024-25. Knowles was defensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2024 and at Penn State in 2025. They clashed three times at those schools in high-profile Big Ten games, but this will be their first SEC battle.

Here’s what we can learn from past meetings between Knowles and Stein.

Adams: Tennessee better realize Kentucky has become 'Kenlucky'

05:00 PM ET, November 7 2026, John Adams

Here we go again: Tennessee and Kentucky in another November matchup of nationally ranked teams contending for a championship.

Sorry, the sarcasm was irresistible. I’ve been in Knoxville for 39 games between the Wildcats and Vols but never encountered a matchup in which both teams had such high postseason expectations.

That's because this Kentucky team bears little resemblance to its predecessors, most of whom wilted at the sight of orange. But this isn’t that Kentucky. It’s “Kenlucky.”

Why miscues could cost Tennessee vs disciplined Kentucky

04:15 PM ET, November 7 2026, Emmett Siegel

Tennessee's practices last week included plenty of work to eliminate pre-snap penalties. Wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope harped on his unit's alignment at the line of scrimmage. Everyone worked on not jumping offsides and avoiding false starts.

Tennessee knows it needs to be more disciplined against Kentucky. That's because the Wildcats are playing as clean as any team in the nation under their first-year coach Will Stein.

Here's how mistakes, like penalties and turnovers, could hurt the Vols against Kentucky.

Spooky 'Rocky Top' has a Dark Mode history at Neyland Stadium

02:45 PM ET, November 7 2026, Keenan Thomas

A "Rocky Top" remix with echoes that haunt and tension that builds has become synonymous with Tennessee's "Dark Mode" alter ego, and tonight's game against Kentucky is a reminder of the touching story of family, loss and Vols fandom behind it.

Miles Kredich created "Spooky Rocky Top" in 2022, but the song took on deeper meaning after the 2023 death of his twin brother, Ben Kredich, with whom he shared a lifelong connection to Tennessee and the song.

If Josh Heupel does this for first time, Tennessee will make the CFP

02:15 PM ET, November 7 2026, Adam Sparks

Tennessee likely must go undefeated in November, which it’s never done under coach Josh Heupel, to make the College Football Playoff. The Vols probably need a 10-2 record to make the 12-team field.

Two opponents vying for playoff spots, a challenging road trip and a rivalry game stand in its way. Roster attrition also will come into play in the first nine-game conference schedule in SEC history.

What's at stake in Tennessee vs Kentucky? More than just playoff picture

12:45 PM ET, November 7 2026, Adam Sparks and John Adams

Is Tennessee in danger of the Kentucky program closing a century-long gap if the Vols lose to a playoff-bound Wildcats team?

Historically, that sounds ridiculous, but in the present it's worth exploring. The Wildcats have a projected playoff team. And speaking of playoffs, Tennessee still has a path if it can beat Kentucky.

On this podcast episode of "The Volunteer State," beat writer Adam Sparks and columnist John Adams discuss what’s at stake in this rivalry game, including program momentum in the transfer portal era and potential twists in UT's quarterback saga.

Adams: History, noise favor Tennessee vs Kentucky, other SEC picks

11:45 AM ET, November 7 2026, John Adams

Tennessee has a tough act to follow at Neyland Stadium today. And I’m not just referring to its 26-10 victory over Alabama in its most recent home game on Oct. 17. That performance was measured in decibels as much as points.

UT fans made so much noise that its stadium is being recognized as the nation’s loudest college venue. You know what happens when a fan base gets a reputation like that?

Answer: It tries to get even louder. That could be a major advantage for the Vols against Kentucky.

Read columnist John Adams' picks for every SEC game this week here, including Tennessee vs Kentucky.

Adams: CFP rankings apparently didn't include Tennessee vs Alabama result

11:01 AM ET, November 7 2026, John Adams

If two teams had the same record when I voted in the AP Top 25 poll, I invariably favored the team that won in head-to-head competition. In fact, the AP emphasized head-to-head results when issuing its preseason guidelines to voters. It still does.

The College Football Playoff apparently has different guidelines. Otherwise, how could it have ranked Alabama fifth and Tennessee 13th when both teams were 6-2 and the Vols dominated their matchup?

On second thought, maybe it has no guidelines. Or, perhaps, it stresses something less tangible – such as, “go with your gut.” Another guideline might be: “Got a whim? Go with it.”

Read John Adams' column on the first CFP rankings here.

Why Alabama is far ahead of Tennessee in CFP poll despite losing to Vols

10:01 AM ET, November 7 2026, Adam Sparks

When the first College Football Playoff rankings were released, it felt as if Tennessee's field-storming, cigar-smoking win over Alabama never happened.

Tennessee was the second team out of the projected bracket. That wasn't a surprise because it followed along with projections. But Alabama was ranked No. 5 despite losing 26-10 to Tennessee.

So why is there such a big gap between Alabama and Tennessee? Read why here.

Tennessee vs. Kentucky prediction

07:30 AM ET, November 7 2026, Adam Sparks

Tennessee 28, Kentucky 24: The Vols can certainly beat themselves against the most disciplined team in the SEC. Kentucky leads the league in turnover margin and fewest penalties. But UT can take control of this game by winning the line of scrimmage. That means DeSean Bishop earns bruising yards and UT’s defensive line collapses the pocket around Kenny Minchey. Give Tennessee the edge because of the overwhelming atmosphere of Neyland Stadium in a night game in dark mode.
