The college football season has made it through the first month. Nonconference play has given way to SEC play, and we're starting to see who some of the league's best teams are for 2026.

The typical names are at the top of the SEC standings through Week 4, with Alabama and Georgia showing up. It's a resurgent season for the Florida Gators in the first year of the Jon Sumrall era. They look like a legit SEC contender after knocking off Ole Miss on Saturday.

Mississippi State has been the surprise of the first month. They're 4-0 with wins over Minnesota, South Carolina, and Missouri. Bulldogs quarterback Kamario Taylor leads State into a top-25 showdown this week against the Alabama Crimson Tide and their young quarterback Keelon Russell.

Texas is the only other undefeated team in SEC play. The preseason pick to win the conference went up to Knoxville and came away with a three-point win over the Volunteers to hold onto their top spot in the polls.

In the middle of the pack, you have a pair of contenders with one conference loss in LSU and Ole Miss. LSU lost an emotional game against the Rebels in Week 3, while Ole Miss fell on the road in Gainesville. They still have a shot at an SEC title and College Football Playoff berth, but don't have a lot of margin for error.

Several surprises sit at the bottom of the standings. The South Carolina Gamecocks were a trendy bounce-back pick in the preseason. They haven't been able to stop anyone, giving up 41 points in back-to-back weeks against Mississippi State and Alabama.

Texas A&M suffered a home upset loss to Kentucky in Week 3 and then scored just six points on the road in Baton Rouge against the LSU Tigers.

Then there's the Sooners. Oklahoma can't score, wasting a defense that's played fairly well through four weeks. They had some trouble with Georgia, but the Bulldogs are the No. 1 offense in the country through the first month of the season.
