Oklahoma head coach Brett Venables is off to a rough start to his fifth season in Norman, as his Sooners enter their Week 10 matchup against Florida with a 4-4 overall record on the season.
Over the first eight games of the season, Oklahoma has alternated wins and losses.
If the pattern is to hold true, the Sooners should leave Gainesville with an outright victory, which is certainly a tall order for a team that just got their doors blown off by South Carolina by 17 points at home.
Despite how poorly the Sooners have been playing, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has still looked somewhat impressive under center in his second season under Venables.
Mateer has aired it out for 1,835 passing yards this season while also throwing 13 touchdown passes, ranking inside the top 40 in the nation on both accounts.
Following the Sooners’ Week 9 loss to the Gamecocks, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle was fired, which leaves a ton of uncertainty about the direction of an offense that lacks elite offensive playmakers.
While the Sooners offense is scoring just 22 points per game this season, Oklahoma’s defensive unit has been impressive, which isn’t very surprising considering Venables’ experience as a top-tier defensive coordinator.
The Sooners defense is allowing opponents just 20.8 points per game on average, ranking 38th in college football in that metric.
For a Florida offense that has struggled to find an identity at times this season with some concerns at the quarterback position, the Sooners’ clear path to reigning supreme in Week 10 is to play to their strengths in a slow-paced, low-scoring affair.
It has been a very up-and-down first season in Gainesville for Florida head coach Jon Sumrall.
The Gators enter Saturday night’s matchup with Oklahoma with a 5-3 overall record after losing three of their last four games following a very impressive 4-0 start to the season.
Despite signature wins over Ole Miss and Texas, Florida has been very volatile over the last several weeks, making it quite difficult to anticipate which version of the Gators we’ll see week to week.
While the Gators’ losses to Georgia and at Missouri are quite understandable, Florida got its doors blown off by a LaNorris Sellers-led Gamecock bunch in a result that single-handedly destroyed the team’s College Football Playoff aspirations.
It was a very hot start to the campaign for quarterback Aaron Philo, which took a turn for the worse over the last few weeks. Sophomore Tramell Jones Jr. started in a win over Texas when Philo was hurt and is expected to make the start for the Gators on Saturday night.
For a Sumrall offense that has really struggled throwing the football, the Gators will undoubtedly need to rely heavily on star tailback Jadan Baugh, who’s in the midst of a very impressive season thus far.
Baugh leads Florida’s rushing attack with 801 yards on the ground through the team’s first eight games, which ranks 17th in all of college football.
The junior back has also found the end zone a whopping 13 times this season but will get a tough schematic matchup against a well-coached Oklahoma stop unit.
Venables made his career off his prowess as a defensive specialist, playing a major role in Clemson winning two National Championships.
Given Florida’s struggles at the QB position, I fully expect the Sooners to stack the box to try and contain Baugh at all costs.
The Gators have been far worse on the defensive side of the ball, with their eight opponents this season scoring 28.1 PPG, ranking outside the top 100 in the country.
For a Florida team that has played itself out of the College Football Playoff picture over the last several weeks, Sumrall’s bunch will surely still be looking to make a statement in front of its home crowd on Saturday night.
For two teams that have struggled all year to find consistency, this makes for a difficult handicap, especially with all the questions surrounding the Gators’ quarterback situation heading into Week 10’s matchup.
While I’m having a tough time justifying laying nearly a touchdown on a squad that just benched its starting QB last weekend, I ultimately feel Sumrall’s bunch has a definitive edge largely due to Florida being a far superior team when playing in front of a home crowd in Gainesville.
I lean Florida to cover its -6.5 spread in Saturday night’s matchup.
Pick: Florida -6.5
