West Virginia is fresh off a bye week and looking to make a late-season push in the Big 12. While a bowl game remains very much in play for the Mountaineers, the toughest part of the schedule awaits.

There has been some improvement for Rich Rodriguez’s squad as the offense has been more consistent and the ground attack has operated with much more zest. Consistent quarterback play has helped the team move the ball more consistently, but the defense has taken a major step back.

Michael Hawkins has really done a nice job getting comfortable with the offensive system, and his dual-threat play has helped WVU average 468 yards and 35 points per game this season. Hawkins has thrown for 1,598 yards and rushed for 836 yards, and he is responsible for 27 touchdowns scored.

Cam Cook has the ground attack humming with 923 yards as the offense is rushing for 261 yards per game. The Mountaineers have scored 31 or more points in six of eight contests and figure to move the ball a decent amount here in this matchup.

The WVU defense has completely been the story this season, and not in a good way. WVU has surrendered 36 points per game against FBS competition while allowing over seven yards per play. The WVU defense has struggled to get its opponent off the field consistently, and the explosive plays allowed have been a major problem.

WVU has allowed 60 plays this season in excess of 20 yards, far and away the worst number in the FBS.

Texas Tech rebounded nicely from its first loss of the season while securing a 34-26 home win over Arizona last week. Thomas Castellanos got the call at quarterback, and the Tech offense had one of its best offensive days of the season. Castellanos ran the ball 19 times for 117 yards as part of a 328-yard rushing day for the Red Raiders.

J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey have been a great running back pair while combining to achieve 1,070 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns this season, with Quinten Joyner also getting some of the carries. The passing offense has not been as explosive this season, but the offense should find its rhythm against the WVU defense that is the worst in the country in allowing explosive plays.

The TTU defense has been a solid unit this season, but the performance has not been anything close to the national championship caliber defense the Red Raiders had last season. The havoc numbers are down, and the stop-unit allows far too many big plays, ranking 105th nationally.

The defense has allowed 25 points or more in three games in a row, and the defense is allowing six yards per play in Big 12 league games. By comparison, last year’s team did not allow six yards per play in any game all season and finished the year allowing 3.9 yards per snap.

This is still a decent defense, but the TTU defense is not an elite unit like we saw last season.

This game opened with TTU listed as 16.5-point favorites with a total that opened at 62.5 and has been bet up throughout the week. The total currently sits at 65.5. I do like the over in this matchup.

West Virginia cannot prevent explosive plays, and allowing 60 at this point in the season is a bad sign. The Mountaineers allowed 41 or more points in four straight games prior to facing TCU, and even in that game TCU racked up 484 yards, a season high for the Horned Frogs against an FBS opponent. TTU has put up 400 or more total yards in five of its last six games, and the explosive plays are coming in this game for the Red Raiders.

Tech just ran for a season-high 328 rushing yards, and Castellanos adds the run element from the quarterback position that is going to frustrate the WVU defense. Aside from that, Tech is going to have its best passing day of the season here. WVU has allowed 312 or more passing yards in six of seven games against FBS-level competition, with three touchdown passes allowed six times. This defense cannot register stops.

WVU is capable of competing in games in different ways, and Hawkins threw for 464 yards against Cincinnati. Texas Tech’s secondary has been torched at times this season, allowing 417 passing yards against Arizona, 417 vs. Oregon State, and 380 against Arizona State. WVU is going to move the ball, and this team will score points here in this one.

This game has all the makings of an old-school Big 12 shootout. Take the high side.

Pick: Over 65.5 (-114; Play to 68)
