MIAMI, Fla. – For the first time since Dec. 8, 2002, the Miami Hurricanes are ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press’ Top 25 poll.
Coming off a 43-35 win in double overtime against the Florida State Seminoles at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday night, the college football world has flipped.
New AP top 10:
- No. 1 Miami
- No. 2 BYU
- No. 3 Ohio State
- No. 4 Notre Dame
- No. 5 Georgia
- No. 6 Indiana
- No. 7 Ole Miss
- No. 8 Texas Tech
- No. 9 UCLA
- No. 10 Utah
The Hurricanes received 1,697 total points, including 40 of 69 first-place votes.
It appeared to have been a trickle-effect, as it started with unranked Florida beating No. 7 Texas at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin in a 27-24 outing. The Longhorns fell as Gators sophomore quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. made his first collegiate start. The Gainesville program hadn’t beaten a top-10 team on the road since Nov. 24, 2012, prior to Saturday.

Texas star quarterback Arch Manning had a chance to win the game, but the 22-year-old fumbled the football while the Gators recovered it to secure the upset.
Next, in Athens (Ga.), Georgia was ranked No. 1 for the first time since Week 3 of the 2024 college football season. It very likely won’t last long, as unranked Auburn pulled off a 27-24 upset. The Tigers had a 24-14 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs responded with 10 unanswered points to tie it.
With nearly a minute left in regulation, Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton ran with the football but bumped into fifth-year center Drew Bobo, resulting in a fumble. Tigers safety Sylvester Smith-Reed recovered at Auburn’s 44-yard line. After a couple of run plays, kicker Alex McPherson sealed the deal with a 34-yard game-winning field goal.
Two major upsets because of late quarterback fumbles are extraordinary.

While the Hurricanes were in a fierce back-and-forth against the Seminoles, No. 2 Notre Dame lost to No. 8 BYU 28-24 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. The Fighting Irish haven’t won a road game against a top-10 opponent since Oct. 27, 2012. With less than two minutes in regulation, star quarterback CJ Carr has an opportunity to change the result.
Four seconds left and the 21-year-old threw a pass intended for senior wide receiver Jaden Greathouse, but it was incomplete as time expired.
The Hurricanes were one of four top-10 teams not to lose to a lower-ranked or non-top-25 opponent. Under normal circumstances, a double-overtime win against an unranked opponent could be considered a reason to drop. However, several upsets have forced the voters to go about their ballots differently.
It’s the fourth time this season the Associated Press has had a new No. 1.
