Keelon Russell recruiting timeline: How Kalen DeBoer, Alabama stole a 5-star QB from underneath SMU's nose originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Alabama starting quarterback Keelon Russell is in his first season as the Tide's starter. He spent the 2025 season backing up Ty Simpson before taking the reins of the Crimson Tide offense this season.
Last year was a learning experience — one spent sitting behind Simpson, preparing for spot duty as well as his moment in the spotlight.
That spotlight has now arrived in spades.
Now that Simpson is in the NFL, Alabama's national title aspirations have been fully turned over to Russell, a native of Duncanville, Texas. Here's a look back at the former blue-chip quarterback's recruiting process and the late twist that landed him in Tuscaloosa.

Keelon Russell as a recruit
Russell was rated as a five-star recruit in the class of 2025. Per the 247Sports Composite, he was rated as the No. 2 overall signal-caller, right behind Michigan's Bryce Underwood.
Duncanville is a suburb of Dallas, sitting roughly 21 miles southwest of the city.
"When I met Keelan, he was in the seventh grade," Duncanville assistant Gabe Samuels told The Sporting News. "He just was a kid that just loved playing football. Didn't have a care in the world, as every 12-year-old does."
Duncanville, which plays in 6A Region II, has won three state championships. Russell helped the Panthers win their last two in 2022 and 2023.
"As he moved to high school, he took the leadership role very seriously as a quarterback," Samuels said. "And even as his freshman year, moving through his sophomore year, he was always, 'Hey, y'all, come on, let's do what we got to do so we can win.' So that was always something that shone in him at an early age was a leadership factor."
Per Samuels, Memphis was one of the first schools to offer Russell. But the quarterback initially caught the attention of SMU. The Mustangs' campus is less than 20 miles from his hometown.
"SMU was always intrigued by him," Samuels said of the Mustangs. "They just like everybody with quarterback, 'we want to see more.' And they got him on campus and they got to see everything firsthand. It was, this is the final nail in the coffin. [SMU] knew they wanted to offer him, they just had to make sure he checked every box."
Russell committed to SMU early in his recruiting process, in September 2023. During his sophomore season in 2022, he took over for injured starter Jameir Willis and led the Panthers to a 6A state title. It was in that game that he first showed his coaches what he could do with his legs.
"The whole season we didn't have a true quarterback [behind him]," Samuels said. "We had other players, but it was always 'protect him, don't let him do this, don't let him run, always hand the ball off.' We played in the state championship game, and it was in the first quarter. He pulled the ball and he ran up the middle of the field and scored a touchdown 80 yards."

How Alabama stole Keelon Russel from SMU
Going into his junior season in 2024, he started attending more camps and getting more exposure. That's when he caught the attention of new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer. The Tide offered Russell in April 2024, just a few months after DeBoer replaced Nick Saban following his retirement.
"The allure of Alabama kind of took him by surprise when they came calling and offered him," Samuels said.
That spring and summer, he took visits to Ole Miss, as well as SMU and Alabama. A few days after his visit to Tuscaloosa, he flipped his commitment from the Mustangs to the Tide. Russell's visit is what sealed the deal.
"I remember him telling me, once he got up there, he knew," Samuels said. "He felt it in his soul, that that's where he was supposed to be."
DeBoer also helped develop quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who spent two seasons with him at Washington, where he helped lead the Huskies to a College Football Playoff victory over Texas and a berth in the national title game during the 2023-24 season.
Penix was picked No. 8 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2024 NFL Draft and is considered to be the team's franchise quarterback of the future, despite missing some games due to injury.
The summer of 2024 was also important for Russell, as he was named the MVP of the premier recruiting event for quarterbacks, the Elite 11. He competed alongside Mississippi State's Kamario Taylor that year.
"Keelan was just a kid that just wanted to play football. And thinking about going to the NFL, I know that's on a lot of people's mind, but he didn't walk around boasting about it. Once he won the Elite 11, I think [he thought] 'what is next for me to get to the next level after college?' I think that played a bigger part in it, and DeBoer has that track record of getting quarterbacks to the next level, and that probably intrigued him a lot."

Keelon Russel blossoms as two-sport athlete
"He was always fast, but when he ran track, he learned mechanics and techniques," Samuels said.
"If he would have given track 100% like he did football, he probably could have won state in the 400-meter," he added.
Samuels knew Russell had taken the next step as a passer during a game against DeSoto, one of Duncanville's biggest rivals. Russell also played with current Oregon starting receiver Dakorien Moore in high school.
"I think he threw five touchdowns, but he threw four touchdowns in the first half," Samuels said. "He threw one to Moore, he rolled to his right and he threw it off of one leg and he threw it to the back pylon. It was like it was on the money. When he made that throw, and it was like, okay, he's a next-level quarterback. [There's] nothing he can't do."

While it is early in his Alabama career, Russell looks cool and confident so far running the Tide's offense. He's thrown for 1,414 yards with 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions, while rushing for another four scores.
"He's not too high, not too low on himself," Samuels said. "In the Kentucky game, he threw an interception, and as soon as he got the ball back, he ran back out there, was like, 'What's next?' It happened. So he's never been too high, been too low. It's just always an even keel. What's next? When he's in between the white lines, 'What am I doing next? I can throw a 90-yard touchdown, or I can throw a five-yard pass. I'm on to the next play,' and I think that's something he's always been able to do."
Sounds like that's exactly the type of quarterback Alabama needs for the 2026 season and beyond.
