Minnesota earned one of its biggest wins of the P.J. Fleck era in Week 5 against Michigan, which means the 2026 season outlook has completely changed. The Gophers are 4-1 and 2-0 in conference play through five weeks. Their postseason outlook could get very exciting depending on how this week goes against Purdue.
Gophers bowl game projections
The bowl system might completely change after the 2026-27 season, but the Gophers have been a shoo-in for a bowl game in seven of the nine seasons under Fleck. They’re now just two wins away from officially earning bowl eligibility this season, and the national projections are interesting.
- On3 (Brett McMurphy): ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Missouri
- ESPN (Mark Schlabach): Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl vs. Kentucky
- ESPN (Kyle Bonagura): Frisco Football Classic vs. Louisiana
- CBS Sports: Boca Raton Bowl vs. Boise State
- Athlon (Steve Lassan): Pinstripe Bowl vs. Virginia
A trip to the ReliaQuest or Music City Bowl to face an SEC opponent is probably one that most Gophers fans could get behind. The other three options would probably happen if the second half of the season gets a little bumpy.
Big Ten outlook
The Gophers are one of seven remaining unbeaten teams in the Big Ten. They have the worst betting odds to win the conference (100-1) out of that group, but undefeated in conference play is undefeated in conference play. It appears that Minnesota is firmly among the second tier of Big Ten teams, but the order remains to be seen.

Despite Oregon’s early loss, the Ducks, Indiana and Ohio State are still the true championship contenders in the conference. You can argue that Iowa, UCLA, Minnesota, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Nebraska and USC are all in the next tier, but placing those teams in an order feels like a dart throw.
Liebert’s post-Week 5 Big Ten power rankings
- 1. Ohio State
- 2. Indiana
- 3. Oregon
- 4. Iowa
- 5. UCLA
- 6. Northwestern
- 7. Minnesota
- 8. Wisconsin
- 9. Nebraska
- 10. USC
- 11. Purdue
- 12. Michigan
- 13. Washington
- 14. Penn State
- 15. Illinois
- 16. Michigan State
- 17. Maryland
- 18. Rutgers
Overall outlook
The door for a truly special Gophers season is wide open after Saturday’s win over Michigan. How they perform this week against Purdue on the road will probably determine if they can go through that door. With a bye week looming, a 5-1 record before hosting Iowa is a start that they could’ve only dreamt of before the season.
Games against UCLA, Northwestern and Wisconsin all look very different than they did before the season. Different as in a lot more difficult than anyone first thought.
It’s easy to get ahead of yourself in college football, but this week feels like Minnesota’s opportunity to prove that this season is different than the last six under Fleck.
