The Gophers didn’t have a game in Week 7, but the entire college football world around them flipped upside down. Let’s take a deeper look at where they stand before an enormous rivalry game against Iowa.
Gophers bowl game projections
The bowl system will likely look completely different after the 2026-27 season, but the Gophers have been a shoo-in for a bowl game in seven of the nine seasons under P.J. Fleck. They’re still just two wins away from officially earning bowl eligibility this season, and they have six opportunities left on the schedule.
- On3 (Brett McMurphy): Pinstripe Bowl vs. NC State
- ESPN (Mark Schlabach): Pinstripe Bowl vs. Pittsburgh
- ESPN (Kyle Bonagura): No bowl game
- CBS Sports: First Responder Bowl vs. Florida State
- Athlon (Steve Lassan): First Responder Bowl vs. UTSA
The Gophers last played in the Pinstripe Bowl in 2022 against Syracuse, which was their first time playing in any iteration of the game. They’ve never played in the First Responder Bowl, which is located in Dallas. Either game would be a little underwhelming for Fleck in his 10th season.
Big Ten outlook
The Gophers’ 4-2 start to the season has been disappointing to some, but they’re still in a five-way tie for third place in the Big Ten standings. Ohio State and Indiana appear to be in a tier of their own, and UCLA is right there, especially since it doesn’t play the Buckeyes or Hoosiers. Minnesota still has an opportunity to show it belongs in the second tier.

USC, Iowa, Northwestern and Oregon have all had moments this season. The Gophers have a huge opportunity to add another this week against Iowa because they’re firmly in the middle tier of mediocrity right now with Wisconsin, Nebraska, Purdue, Washington and Michigan.
Liebert’s post-Week 6 Big Ten power rankings
- 1. Ohio State

- 6. Oregon
- 7. USC

Overall outlook
Fleck and his coaching staff routinely preach that every game is a one-game season. That will be put to the test this week against Iowa. Early betting odds favor the Hawkeyes by as many as seven points, so it will be a tough test for Minnesota. Another rivalry win would set the tone for the second half of the season, but a loss could really put the Gophers in a hole with a daunting schedule remaining. With a 1-8 record against the Hawkeyes, this Saturday feels like one of the biggest games of the Fleck era.
