Five Longhorns frame Texas’s preseason ceiling

Preseason recognition does not settle a depth chart or win a September game, but it does show where the national expectations sit. Texas led the country with five Walter Camp Preseason All-America selections, one more than Indiana and Oregon.

Quarterback Arch Manning, offensive lineman Trevor Goosby, edge Colin Simmons and linebacker Rasheem Biles made the first team. Wide receiver Cam Coleman landed on the second team. That distribution is the larger story: the Longhorns have a nationally recognized player at the center of the offense, on its edge, and at two levels of the defense.

Biles and Coleman arrive as transfers, so the preseason question is not only how much elite ability Texas has. It is how quickly established stars and important newcomers become one team before the schedule accelerates.
