Just when you thought the college football season could not have any more chaos, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and UCLA delivered massive wins to shift the playoff picture yet again. This season feels as wide open as any we have seen in a long time.

My playoff projections after Week 6:

  • P4 Champions: Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, BYU
  • G6 Leader: Boise State
  • At-Larges: Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama, Texas, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Utah
  • Outside Looking In: UCLA, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State

Some notes from Week 6:

  • I am moving BYU up to my Big 12 champion. Utah’s defense has struggled the last two weeks, and BYU outgained Iowa State by nearly 300 yards on Friday night. The Cougars welcome Notre Dame on Saturday in one of the biggest non-conference games of the regular season.
  • Georgia is now clearly in the driver’s seat to make the SEC Championship Game after beating Alabama on the road. The Bulldogs are the only SEC team without a conference loss. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
  • Texas’ offense has looked rather ordinary since beating Ohio State in Week 2. The Longhorns are certainly happy to have that win in their back pocket after losing to Oklahoma. They still have games against Ole Miss, Missouri, Mississippi State, and LSU on the schedule. Texas can likely survive one more loss, but the margin for error ends there.
  • Texas Tech was idle this weekend, but the Red Raiders benefited from the chaos and moved into this week’s projected field. Their remaining schedule is manageable, and a quality win opportunity remains with a road contest at Oklahoma State looming in November.
  • UCLA jumped up to the cusp of the field with a road win at Oregon that felt more dominant than the scoreboard showed. USC is the only ranked team the Bruins have left, and the Trojans have looked less than impressive despite the 5-1 record. If UCLA can avoid a letdown spot, we could be talking about the Bruins as a playoff team in Year 1 of the Bob Chesney era. What could have been…
  • Florida and LSU have almost completely eliminated themselves after appearing the field just two weeks ago. Neither team can afford a loss for the rest of the season.
