With Arkansas football getting the week off, it's a great time to use this midseason lull to compare the Hogs against the rest of the SEC in various categories. This time, let's look at the defenses around the conference.

The Arkansas defense wasn't able to hold up well against top-level SEC opponents, particularly Georgia. Placed against prime SEC talent, this is not a world-class defense. However, against opposing offenses with noticeable weaknesses, including and especially at quarterback, this defense has shown it can make plays and force turnovers. It did so against Tennessee. It did so against Vanderbilt. Arkansas would not rate as a great defense, but also not as a terrible one.

In looking at the rest of the SEC, few defenses have been consistently strong. Kentucky and South Carolina get roped into wild games on a regular basis. Their defenses don't have a lockdown dimension. Florida has been all over the place, getting sucked into shootouts and lacking an elite defensive coordinator under coach Jon Sumrall, who might need to make a change this coming offseason.

Texas does have Colin Simmons, but one could reasonably argue that the Longhorns should be better on defense than they have been with a game-wrecker such as Simmons on the field. It's also true that most of Texas's problems stem from the offense and Arch Manning. That said, the UT defense did not look well-disciplined against Florida. Players ran into the wrong gaps repeatedly and were out of position a lot in the second half against an offense with a backup quarterback.

Georgia's defense was good enough to beat Alabama on the road but bad enough to get outplayed by Auburn at home. UGA has a solid unit, but still not the elite group Kirby Smart had back in 2021.

LSU's defense wasn't able to hold down Kentucky or Ole Miss. The Tigers can't be happy with the way their defense has played to this point in the season. The Tigers of Missouri and Auburn can't be happy, either. Mizzou has been smashed on the road. Auburn gave up a pile of points to Florida at home and doesn't know what it will produce on defense from week to week.

Vanderbilt just doesn't have the horses on defense. The personnel is lacking for the Commodores.

Alabama did well against Georgia and Tennessee but struggled earlier in the season. Texas A&M's problems mostly flow from the offense, but the defense needs to create more takeaways than what it has done thus far.

Ole Miss's defense away from home has been a disaster. The Rebels would be a national title contender if their defense wasn't so unreliable.

Tennessee's defense has held the Vols together in a year when the UT offense has struggled. The same can be said for Oklahoma, whose defense deserves a lot better than John Mateer at quarterback. Mississippi State's defense just can't stand tall against the better offenses of the SEC.

All in all, you can see what while Arkansas does not have an elite defenses, a lot of other SEC programs are struggling on that side of the ball as well. The outlook for UA on defense is not as grim as one might have previously thought.
