While Arkansas football takes the weekend off, other SEC football programs will occupy the spotlight in Week 8. Let's take a look at the biggest storylines:

1 - Moment of truth for Sark, Arch, and Texas

This is it. If Texas wants to save its season and make the College Football Playoff, beating Ole Miss at home is an absolute necessity. It's very hard to see Texas winning all of its upcoming road games at Missouri, LSU, and Texas A&M, so the Longhorns need to win all of their remaining home games to give themselves as much of a cushion as they possibly can. A loss to Ole Miss could end Arch Manning's season, given that Texas would be in such a mess that Sarkisian would feel the need to play his other quarterbacks in the month of November to see what they can potentially offer. Sarkisian faces a last-chance moment with Arch Manning against Ole Miss. Failure in this game would make the season a total failure and utter disaster. Ole Miss made the playoff semifinals last season and has a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate in Trinidad Chambliss. Texas has to dig really deep to stay alive in the playoff race. It won't be easy.

2 - Ole Miss could overcome one big obstacle

The Rebels have lost only one game. If they get through the road trip to Texas, their home game against Georgia is the only massively difficult game left on their schedule. A road trip to Oklahoma isn't easy, but the Rebels will definitely be favored in that game and will have the obviously better team. Georgia is the one remaining game (after Texas) in which Ole Miss won't clearly have the superior roster. If Ole Miss beats Texas, the Rebels become more likely than not to make the College Football Playoff. Trinidad Chambliss is a quarterback no other playoff team wants to face in December or January.

3 - South Carolina's last stand

If Shame Beamer can't beat a Tennessee team with a subpar quarterback at home, it will be hard for anyone in Columbia to have faith in him as the long-term custodian of Gamecock football. Even though South Carolina has several losses and Tennessee has only one, the Gamecocks are favored. Vegas knows LaNorris Sellers is a far better quarterback than anyone Tennessee has. The Gamecocks frankly should win this game. If they fail, it will be an indictment of their head coach.

4 - Desperation in Tuscaloosa

Alabama has lost two straight games. Texas A&M's season is already a failure. Whoever loses this game, be it Kalen DeBoer or Mike Elko, will face a firestorm in the public eye.

5 - Auburn revival?

Is the Auburn revival for real, or did it merely appear for one week against Georgia? LSU offers a true test for Alex Golesh and Byrum Brown. Let's see what kind of grade they get on this very important and defining exam.
