NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero told The Bill Simmons Podcast this week that he put a simple question to one person who has known Arch Manning for a long time: where does the Texas quarterback land in 2027? The answer named a program woven into the Manning family’s history, and the same one that visits Austin on Saturday night.
A 2027 college season is available to Manning because he redshirted in 2023, leaving him eligible through that year. His choice between the NFL Draft and one more college season has hung over Texas since the summer.
“I texted one person who’s known Arch a long time, and I said, ‘Where do you see Arch in 2027?’ And his response was Ole Miss,” Pelissero said.

The prediction is one unnamed person’s guess, relayed secondhand by a reporter whose beat is the NFL, about a decision that would come only after Texas’ season ends. It has traveled anyway because of what surrounds it, starting with Manning’s family tree.
DEVELOPING: One person who has known Arch Manning for a long time predicts that he’ll transfer to Ole Miss for the 2027 season, per Tom Pelissero.

How strong are Manning’s ties to Ole Miss?
His grandfather, Archie Manning, became the Rebels’ quarterback in the late 1960s, and Archie’s oldest and youngest sons, Cooper and Eli, also attended Ole Miss. Cooper is Arch’s father. Eli played four seasons in Oxford before going No. 1 in the 2004 NFL Draft.
Arch took a recruiting visit to Oxford as a five-star prospect, when Lane Kiffin ran the program, before picking Texas. Kiffin has since left for LSU, and the Rebels are now led by Pete Golding, their former defensive coordinator, who was promoted to replace him.
“I root for Ole Miss to win every other game probably besides that one,” Eli Manning said of Saturday’s matchup on Pardon My Take this month.
At Texas, the 4-2 Longhorns lost to unranked Oklahoma and Florida in back-to-back weeks, with Manning committing a fourth-quarter turnover in both games. Steve Sarkisian said afterward that “everything” about the offense would be evaluated, and backup KJ Lacey was in line for more first-team reps in practice this week. Another loss could knock Texas out of the playoff picture entirely.

Draft analyst Todd McShay has written that another college season looks like Manning’s best path for now, while saying he is more optimistic about Manning’s NFL future than the criticism online suggests. Put together, a year of eligibility left, a struggling season in Austin and three generations of family history in Oxford explain why one text message traveled as far as it did on Friday.
Texas and Ole Miss kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC in Austin, the programs’ first meeting as SEC opponents.
