Texas A&M's two-game losing streak in SEC play has yet to affect the Aggies' No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, as several commits, including four-star Edge Kaden McCarty, have remained locked in with coach Mike Elko and his staff despite the program's current struggles. Leading the cycle, five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews has also stayed the course and has yet to waver from his commitment, but has not officially shut down his recruitment.
Nearly halfway through his senior season at St. Thomas Aquinas, Mark Matthews continues to play at an elite level as the team's starting offensive tackle while also seeing time at defensive tackle, showing his versatility. Matthews is back in College Station this weekend for another unofficial visit, set to visit with Elko and OL coach Adam Cushing before and after the Aggies' Week 5 home matchup vs. Arkansas.
Getting all 26 2027 commits back on campus is of extreme importance amid the losing streak, and for those who feel like Texas A&M's recent slide will directly result in at least one or two players flipping their commitments, sources have told me that the collective belief in Mike Elko's vision for the program shouldn't lead to much, or any, change in the coming months.
After St. Thomas Aquinas's 21-20 road win Friday night, Mark Matthews spoke with 247Sports insider Zach Blostein, reiterating his trust in Mike Elko despite the on-field struggles and saying the Aggies can still get back on track this season.
"Indubitably," Matthews stated. "That's the team I committed to, that's the team I believe in. Of course they can get back on track. That's what coach Elko does. That's what [offensive line] coach [Adam] Cushing does. That's what [offensive coordinator] coach [Holmon] Wiggins does. That's what the offensive staff and the defensive staff does."
When asked if the losing streak and poor play in losses to Kentucky and LSU have affected his recruitment, Matthews responded, "No, sir," and still envisions "waking up in College Station in January." However, Matthews is still considering a visit to Miami due to his relationship with Hurricanes OL coach Alex Maribol.
