Texas announced that former quarterback and safety Duke Carlisle died Friday at age 84. Carlisle was a three-year letterman from 1961 through 1963 and helped the Longhorns compile a 30-2-1 record during his time as a starter.

Carlisle quarterbacked Texas to the 1963 national championship, the first in program history. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the 28-6 Cotton Bowl victory over Navy, earning Outstanding Back honors.

An Academic All-American and team MVP, Carlisle was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1979 and the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame in 2000.
