George Wrighster posted a clip Thursday with a prediction about how the College Football Playoff selection committee would treat the Texas Longhorns if they lose at the Missouri Tigers on Saturday. The former NFL tight end and Unafraid Show host did not give the committee much benefit of the doubt.

“If Missouri beats Texas, the CFP committee will even screw somebody else over to get Texas in the playoff,” Wrighster said.

Texas and Missouri both arrive at Faurot Field at 6-2 and 3-2 in SEC play, and the committee’s first rankings Tuesday put them 11 spots apart. Texas debuted at No. 7. Missouri landed at No. 18.

The only two teams to beat Missouri are the Ole Miss Rebels, 31-3 in Oxford, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 31-24 in Starkville. Texas beat both of them in its last two games, 34-27 over Ole Miss and 31-3 over Mississippi State.

The Longhorns also own a 24-23 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes and a 20-17 win at the Tennessee Volunteers, while Missouri’s best result is a 27-6 home win over the Texas A&M Aggies. Texas’ two losses, to the Oklahoma Sooners and the Florida Gators, both came by three points.

Even with the logos removed, those two resumes would give the committee reasons to put Texas ahead. Wrighster’s claim is about what happens after a loss, when Missouri would hold the head-to-head result.

Would the committee really save a three-loss Texas?

Last December, the committee left a 9-3 Texas team out of the field. The Longhorns finished with three wins over teams in the committee’s top 15 and still landed at No. 13 in the final rankings, behind the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and BYU Cougars.

The same committee did take a three-loss SEC team that day. The Alabama Crimson Tide went in at No. 9 with a 10-3 record, but its third loss came in the SEC Championship Game, a game Texas never reached.

A loss in Columbia would drop Texas to 6-3 with a trip to the LSU Tigers, a home game against the Arkansas Razorbacks and a road game at Texas A&M left. Running that table gets the Longhorns to 9-3, the exact record that left them out a year ago. The difference this time would be the win over Ohio State, and that is the piece of the resume Wrighster expects the committee to lean on..

The Tigers’ remaining schedule after Saturday runs through a trip to the Georgia Bulldogs and home games against the Kentucky Wildcats and Oklahoma, and a three-loss Missouri team would have far less margin than Texas has shown it gets from this committee.

Kickoff in Columbia is at noon ET. If Missouri wins, the rest of Wrighster’s theory gets tested over the final three weeks of the regular season.
