Texas faces off against Ohio State in the “Game of the Year” and Buckeye Nation aren’t the only people flying into Austin this weekend for the game. The Longhorns are inviting a star-studded recruiting visit on the docket, highlighted by top 2027 commit, WR Easton Royal.

On top of that, Brian Swanson, Ismael Camara, Brock Williams and more of the Longhorns 2027 class will be in attendance. Not to mention the elite 2028 prospects like Brysen Wright (No. 1 WR) CJ Whaley (No. 2 ATH) and James Foster III (No. 2 S) will be in attendance.

This star-studded list of visitors is the perfect way to encapsulate the importance of the weekend for Steve Sarkisian and Texas. The 2027 class is shaping up to be another Top 10 class in the country. This weekend is a chance to solidify that class, including Royal, who LSU has been trying to flip. A loss could put Texas in a disadvantage position with Royal, especially considering what he saw in Baton Rouge last week.

Now, this isn’t to say a loss would make the 2027 class fall apart. I do not expect that. It does illustrate the importance of this moment when it comes to success, not only this season, but over the next few years. Players like Camara, Royal and Williams-Callis will define the next multiple years for Texas football. Saturday is a chance to solidify that future and not have to panic leading up to signing day.

Beyond the obvious of winning being helpful to continue hot recruiting, this game could represent more for this program. One of the single most important pieces of recruiting in the NIL era is fan buy-in(literally). It’s understood this could be a turning point for Steve Sarkisian’s career, one way or another. If Texas loses, none of the goals for this team are taken away but some fan buy-in will be taken away. That buy-in likely won’t be regained for Sarkisian unless he can turn this season around to win a National Championship. That could spell disaster for recruiting moving forward.

The recruits coming into Austin this weekend represent the future of the Texas program. They could be the group that sees this turning point up close and joins Texas as the group that has to continue the National Championship expectations. They could also be the group that sees Sarkisian fall short once again and end up playing against the Longhorns when their college career comes.

I want to be clear, Texas can lose this weekend and be plenty successful moving forward, both on the field and on the recruiting trail. That being said, a win this weekend paves a clear path towards a special season, something recruits will want to be a part of. The biggest question about Steve Sarkisian’s time at Texas is: can they beat the top 1% of the sport? Well, if the top 1% of recruits in the country see them do just that, they won’t just join the 1% this season, but have a clear path to stay there for a while.
