The Gophers are headed back to the national spotlight, this time as the visiting team for ESPN’s College GameDay.
ESPN surprisingly selected Saturday’s Minnesota-Indiana matchup as the site of its popular pregame show in Week 9. It’ll be just the third time the Gophers have been featured on College GameDay and their first appearance as the road team.
It’s another opportunity for Minnesota to make an impression on a national audience in a season that’s already delivered several big moments.
Minnesota’s GameDay history
College GameDay debuted in 1987 and began traveling to college campuses in 1993, but it took another 26 years for the show to make its first visit to Minnesota.
That came in 2019, when the Gophers hosted rival Wisconsin with a trip to the Big Ten championship game on the line. The atmosphere was electric, though the game itself didn’t go Minnesota’s way. The Badgers rolled to a 38-17 victory.
The show returned to Minneapolis the following season for Minnesota’s Big Ten opener against Michigan, but the experience was drastically different. With the COVID-19 pandemic keeping fans away during the shortened 2020 season, ESPN broadcast the show from inside Minnesota’s stadium. The Gophers went on to lose 49-24.
Hosting College GameDay is a special honor for any university, but Saturday will give Minnesota something it hasn’t experienced before: a chance to be part of the show on an opponent’s campus.
Why Indiana-Minnesota?
ESPN’s decision to head to Bloomington is a bit of a surprise, especially considering the network’s lucrative television deal with the SEC and its tendency to feature marquee matchups from that conference.
Indiana is the reigning national champion, but the Hoosiers are also 20.5-point favorites against Minnesota. It’s hardly the kind of point spread that screams must-see television.
The game won’t even air on an ESPN network. CBS has the broadcast rights, making it just the second College GameDay matchup this season that won’t be televised by ESPN or one of its sister networks.
After featuring an SEC team in five of the first six weeks, ESPN is now going three consecutive weeks without showcasing a team from the conference.
And it’s not as though the network lacked other appealing options.
Arizona and Texas Tech meet in a ranked Big 12 showdown at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN, while Florida and Georgia renew their rivalry in one of the biggest meetings between the programs in years at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
Ohio State at USC might have been another contender, but the Trojans didn’t help their cause by laying an egg at Camp Randall Stadium in Week 8.
So why Bloomington?
For starters, Indiana and Minnesota are both coming off big wins, and the defending national champions are certainly a compelling draw. The selection also gives ESPN another opportunity to push back against the perception that College GameDay disproportionately favors the SEC.
Minnesota has also given the network plenty to work with.
Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck has delivered some memorable moments this season, from his postgame blood ritual after beating Washington to calling the upset of Michigan one of the best days of his life.
Those moments, combined with Minnesota’s 5-2 record and 3-1 mark in the Big Ten, have made the Gophers a more intriguing story for a national audience.
How to watch College GameDay
Minnesota already got a taste of the national pregame spotlight when FOX brought Big Noon Kickoff to Minneapolis for the Gophers’ Week 5 matchup against Michigan.
But College GameDay is the show that helped establish the blueprint for traveling college football pregame productions, and it still carries a different level of fanfare.
- Date: Saturday, Oct. 31
- Time: 8-11 a.m. CT
- TV/streaming: ESPN
Rece Davis hosts the show alongside analysts Desmond Howard, Nick Saban, Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit, with the crew breaking down the biggest storylines in college football before making their picks for the day’s top games.
One of the biggest traditions is the celebrity guest picker, and Saturday’s show could feature a familiar face.
With College GameDay visiting Indiana for just the third time, it’ll be interesting to see whether former Hoosiers head coach Lee Corso is invited to make the picks.
The show will broadcast live from outside Showalter Fountain in the heart of Indiana University’s campus. The Pat McAfee Show also typically travels to College GameDay locations, so there’s a good chance McAfee’s Friday program will originate from Bloomington.
For Minnesota, it’s the latest in a growing list of national showcases this season.
The Gophers’ Week 2 matchup against Mississippi State landed CBS’s 2:30 p.m. CT television slot, the Michigan game brought FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff to Minneapolis, and now Saturday’s showdown with Indiana will air on CBS while receiving the College GameDay treatment.
The Gophers have had plenty of opportunities to play in front of a national audience this fall. Saturday brings another, and perhaps their biggest stage yet.
