Why Lane Kiffin isn’t too surprised by LSU’s loss to Kentucky – ‘you don’t execute, you don’t execute’ appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
LSU coach Lane Kiffin was not surprised by his team’s mistakes in its 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky on Saturday. The No. 10 Tigers had chances to close out the game but failed to make key plays. The Wildcats pulled off an upset at Kroger Field.
Kiffin pointed to missed tackles and poor execution as major reasons LSU could not hold on to its lead. Kentucky scored a late field goal to force overtime before winning with a two-point conversion.
“I mean, not really. If you don’t execute the punt return, got a player there tackling them, and he doesn’t tackle them, and it goes outside in the long run,” Kiffin said. “So if you don’t do fundamentally sound stuff, you get exposed versus good teams.”

LSU led 27-24 with 97 seconds left in regulation, but Kentucky drove 63 yards in 1 minute, 25 seconds to set up the game-tying field goal. The Wildcats then matched LSU’s touchdown in overtime and scored on quarterback Kenny Minchey’s two-point run to secure the 35-34 victory.
LSU dropped to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in SEC play after the defeat. However, both defeats came on the road, extending the Tigers’ conference road losing streak to eight games. Their last SEC road win came against Arkansas on October 19, 2024.
LSU’s offense produced 410 total yards, including 316 passing yards, but its running game struggled. The Tigers managed just 94 yards on 36 rushing attempts. Quarterback Sam Leavitt completed 25 of 34 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns, but he also committed a turnover.
Penalties added to LSU’s problems. The Tigers were flagged seven times for 50 yards, while Kentucky had two penalties for 20 yards.
