Penn State fans demand Matt Campbell’s job after another demoralizing loss appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Coach Matt Campbell’s Penn State Nittany Lions are 3-3 on the season after a 31-23 home loss to Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans that included a record-setting attendance mark at Beaver Stadium. Campbell spoke up in favor of QB Rocco Becht after the loss but fans were far more interested in discussing the new Nittany Lions head coach’s current standing with the program.
Social media was rife with thinly-veiled references to Campbell’s job and whether or not he should continue in his current role. Campbell has yet to score a signature win with Penn State, and remains the target of much frustration on social media.
Fans vent over Matt Campbell
Fans became frustrated as Campbell’s team failed to capitalize on a raucous home crowd that ranked as the fourth-largest in college football history, behind two Michigan games and a game between Tennessee and Virginia Tech in Bristol, TN in 2016.

“I genuinely never felt good about Matt Campbell…It wasn’t his place like EVER to coach at Penn State,” one said. “Absolutely pissed when he brought half his stupid Iowa State Cyclones team. Penn State deserves so much better man.”
Another compared him to former PSU coach James Franklin.
“Campbell is a downgrade. Sucks to say but even Franklin is a better game manager and at least he can recruit. I’m honestly shocked by how bad Matt Campbell is at coaching.”
“If Penn State can afford it. You fire Matt Campbell,” another added. “UCLA (has) shown if the guy is correct you can compete right away in this league. Campbell was a fallback option.”
“Campbell has no excuses with an easy schedule. It’s a joke,” another added. “Lose next week and (he’s gone).” another said.
Penn State should support Matt Campbell
Campbell’s team is going through a rough patch right now, but things will get better. The Penn State football program has the resources to bring in the talent Campbell’s team needs and he should be commended for bringing Iowa State players, not criticized.
Campbell took over Penn State with a short window to get things done and to prepare for another season in a loaded Big Ten Conference, doing the best with the time he had. Becht looks like a solid option at the quarterback position and the Nittany Lions’ schedule has been tougher than most people realize.
Week 5’s road game at Northwestern came against a team christening a new stadium in front of 30,000 plus screaming fans and it marked one of the biggest games in the lives of NU quarterback Aidan Chiles, coach David Braun, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and others. Fans demanded Campbell’s job after the Northwestern loss, a refrain that shows little sign of slowing.
Penn State is now 0-3 in Big Ten play, an unacceptable mark considering the talent on Campbell’s team. Losing to Wisconsin hurt, and losing to Northwestern made it worse. Losing to USC is forgivable, but also a painful loss as it appears to have knocked the Nittany Lions out of the Big Ten and College Football Playoff races.
Penn State doesn’t have any ranked teams left on its schedule, and faces a challenging but winnable road game at Michigan in Week 7. A win over the Wolverines would go a long way toward restoring the luster on Campbell and his Penn State program. A loss would once again bring out the boo birds and the detractors as Campbell continues to find his way forward at one of the country’s most recognizable college football programs.
