Kirk Ferentz rarely gives candid answers during his weekly press conferences, but Tuesday's remarks caught everyone by surprise.
Iowa's quarterback battle officially kicked off on Monday when the depth chart featured an "OR" between Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown's names, but any speculation about who would be the starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes' rivalry showdown at Minnesota on Saturday (2:30 p.m., FS1) ended during Ferentz's Tuesday press conference.
Ferentz wasn't directly asked who would be the starter, but it didn't matter how the question was formatted because he went out and spilled the beans.
"Did I put up the depth chart? So Hecklinski will be our starter Saturday," Ferentz said.
Whether Ferentz intended to break the news to the public on a Tuesday afternoon in the first place is unknown, but based on the subsequent smirks from Ferentz and sports information director Matt Weitzel probably meant the news wasn't supposed to come out until closer to kickoff (Hecklinski told the media earlier that he didn't know what the plan for Saturday was yet).
Once the laughter in the room subsided, Ferentz was then repeatedly asked about what led to this decision. After all, the move isn't necessarily about poor performance. Hank Brown performed admirably during his stint as the starter, which included a game-winning 91-yard touchdown drive at Michigan, but the move simply came down to what Ferentz thought was best for Iowa's success moving forward.
"The number one thing we're trying to do right now is when we take the field, we're going to try to win the game. That's what you practice for and work for, going back to January," Ferentz said.
Ferentz declared Brown to be 100% healthy after he suffered an AC joint sprain against Ohio State and even said he could've played against Washington in an emergency situation, but it appears a close battle in practice during the bye week flipped the pendulum towards Hecklinski as the decision was made over the weekend.
"It's not a coin toss, but it's awfully close. Both guys, you can make an argument either way that makes sense. We just decided that was the best thing at this time to do, and we'll just keep playing forward here," Ferentz said.
Though Ferentz isn't going to elaborate further, there could be other reasons why he opted to go with Hecklinski. For starters, Hecklinski is riding the hot hand after going 14-for-19 for three touchdowns at Washington on Oct. 9. Offensive coordinator Tim Lester said last week that Hecklinski's mobility allowed him to call more plays from the shotgun formation, so those could be potential reasons for the switch.
Unlike previous Iowa quarterback controversies over recent years, Hecklinski will have all the tools to seize the starting job. Wide receivers Reece Vander Zee and Tony Diaz are legitimate pass catchers on the outside, as is the reliable tight end DJ Vonnahme. While the run game has struggled for most of the year, it appeared to find a groove against Washington thanks to an improving offensive line.
Though Hecklinski has the job, there's no such thing as a long-term starting quarterback for Iowa in 2026. Ferentz continued to express his confidence in both quarterbacks, so there's always a chance Brown could relieve Hecklinski if he can't match his success against Minnesota.
But that's only a hypothetical. This is Hecklinski's team until further notice.
