Why Alabama’s No. 5 CFP ranking is about to face its biggest test originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The first College Football Playoff rankings created a debate Alabama cannot avoid: How much should one head-to-head result matter when the committee weighs a team’s full season?
Alabama opened at No. 5 with a 6-2 record. Tennessee, also 6-2, landed at No. 13 after beating the Crimson Tide by 16 points. LSU is No. 14, also at 6-2, and Alabama visits the Tigers Saturday in a game that could quickly change the playoff conversation.
The rankings are not final, and there are several weeks left for teams to improve their résumés. Still, the first reveal puts Alabama in an unusually visible position: a two-loss team ranked in the top five, with a recent head-to-head defeat to another two-loss team ranked eight places lower.
The committee says it weighs the whole resume
The selection committee says it evaluates a team’s full profile, including schedule strength, head-to-head results, results against common opponents and other relevant factors. Its guidance says head-to-head carries additional consideration when teams are comparable.

That leaves room for debate about what “comparable” means. Alabama’s ranking suggests the committee valued its broader résumé more highly than Tennessee’s victory in their meeting. But the gap is large enough to invite scrutiny, especially with both teams holding identical records.
The committee will release another set of rankings next week. Alabama has time to improve its position, but the No. 5 placement has already raised the stakes for every remaining game.

LSU can turn the debate into a result
Alabama’s matchup with LSU offers a more immediate test than arguing over the first ranking. LSU is also 6-2 and sits at No. 14. A win would give Alabama another ranked victory to add to its case. A loss would make the Tide’s top-five spot much harder to defend.
For LSU, the stakes are just as clear. The Tigers can beat a team the committee currently sees as a playoff contender and strengthen their own position at the same time.
The first rankings are a snapshot, not a verdict. But the Alabama-Tennessee gap has made the committee’s criteria part of the story, and Saturday’s game gives both teams a chance to add evidence.
