Memphis will play its first exhibition game of the season in less than a month, and it will start the season on November 2. With the season right around the corner, people are starting to post predictions and preseason rankings for the upcoming college basketball season.

The Bart Trovik T-Rank is an analytical ranking that uses offensive and defensive efficiency. It is very similar to how KenPom ranks teams.

Torvik has posted its T-Rank for the upcoming season, and it has Penny Hardaway’s team at No. 110 in the country and No. 5 in the American Conference.

The Tigers added a ton of new pieces over the offseason, and it’s hard to figure what the group will look like, especially playing against a tough non-conference slate. Here’s a look at where Torvik ranks Memphis’ 13 current known non-conference opponents.

@ Mississippi State (Exhibition)

Torvik ranking: #62

Memphis will play Mississippi State in an exhibition game in late October, and it will give the Tigers an opportunity to see SEC competition before playing a tough non-conference schedule. Hardaway’s team could also see the Bulldogs during the Battle 4 Atlantis in October.

Mississippi State returns guard Josh Hubbard, who averaged 22.2 points per game last year.

@ Arkansas (Exhibition)

Torvik ranking: #21

A few days after their exhibition in Starkville, the Tigers will travel to Fayetteville for their final exhibition game against Arkansas. The Razorbacks finished with the top recruiting class in the country in 2026, and they’ll look to build off last year’s sweet 16 appearance.

Iowa State

Torvik ranking: #19

Memphis will start the season in South Dakota for a neutral site game against Iowa State. The Cyclones are a preseason top 20 team, and on Monday, they announced guard Tamin Lipsey, who averaged 13.5 points and 5.1 assists last year, will be returning to Ames after he was granted an injunction by a judge in Indiana.

VCU

Torvik ranking: #53

The Tigers will host VCU in its first home game of the season, and the Rams are a borderline top 50 team, according to Bart Torvik. Serbian forward Lazar Djokovic returns after averaging 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds as a junior.

@ Vanderbilt

Torvik ranking:#24

Vanderbilt won 27 games last season for the first time since the 1992-93 season, and it brings back Tyler Tanner, who was viewed as a draft prospect last season.

Louisville

Torvik ranking: #8

Louisville had one of the strongest offseason in the country, and they finished with the No. 2 transfer portal class, according to 247Sports. The Cardinals beat Memphis 99-73 in Kentucky last season, and the Tigers will look to get revenge inside FedExForum.

Evansville

Torvik ranking: #275

Evansville struggled last year, finishing 7-25, but it revamped its roster during the offseason and will look to turn things around this year. The Purple Aces return AJ Casey, who averaged 13.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and two assists last year.

Penn State

Torvik ranking: #106

Mike Rhodes returns for his third season as the head coach, and he’ll look to improve after a 12-30 year during the 2025-26 season. Penn State added 6-foot-8 guard Brant Byers, who averaged 14.2 points and shot 39.2 percent from deep at Miami (OH), during the offseason, and they’ll look for him to play a big role for the Nittany Lions.

Dayton

Torvik ranking: #73

Dayton is usually considered one of the top mid-major programs in the country, but Bart Torvik has the Flyers starting the season at No. 73. Head coach Anthony Grant returns for his 10th season, and his team will take on the Tigers in Columbus.

Jackson State

Torvik ranking: #284

Jackson State brings back several players from last year’s team, and the Tigers will host Jackson State for the first time since 2023.

@ Baylor

Torvik ranking: #48

Memphis played Baylor inside FedExForum last year, and the Tigers will play a return game in December. The Bears went 17-17 last year, but they added five-star combo guard Dylan Mingo during the offseason.

Grand Canyon

Torvik ranking: #45

Some people view Grand Canyon as having the best offseason by a mid-major in college basketball, and the Antelopes added several transfers from high-major programs. The Tigers will play back-to-back games against the Drew brothers, and Bryce Drew will look to return to the NCAA Tournament after missing it last season.

@ Texas

Torvik ranking: #26

Texas made a Sweet 16 run last year, and Sean Miller is bringing in the No. 5 transfer class of the offseason. Some believe the Longhorns could be one of the top teams in the SEC this season, and in addition to a top transfer portal class, they added Marcus Spears Jr., the No. 8 player in the class of 2026.

Spears was the No. 1 player in the class of 2027, but he will join the Longhorns a year earlier.

Little Rock

Torvik ranking: #252

Travis Ford takes over at Little Rock, and he’ll look to make an impact in his first season after the Trojans went 12-20 last year. Redshirt junior Aaron Clark could play a massive role after averaging 15.3 points for Pepperdine last year.

Utah State

Torvik ranking: #61

Utah State beat Memphis 99-75 last year in Logan, but Jerrod Calhoun left to take over at Cincinnati. The Aggies brought in Ben Jacobson, who spent the last 20 years at Northern Iowa where he led the Panthers to a 397-259 record.
