Texas A&M's disappointing season continues in Week 11 against South Carolina in Columbia, as the Aggies rest this weekend during their Week 10 bye and focus on getting as healthy as possible to make a run over the next four weeks, which will require depth chart changes.
However, coach Mike Elko confirmed during Wednesday's SEC Teleconference that senior quarterback Marcel Reed will remain the starter, despite throwing eight touchdowns and eight interceptions through eight games, while star freshman running back KJ Edwards is the lone bright spot on offense after emerging as the starter.
From Monday to Friday, there has been zero movement to the coaching staff or depth chart, but changes could take place by next week, while the general focus for Mike Elko is to evaluate both the offense and defense, evaluate the various issues, and enter Week 11 with a game plan that, hopefully, gives the Aggies a chance to win every remaining game.
Per ESPN FPI, Texas A&M is not predicted to win another game, which isn't shocking, but it further proves this is a bad football team that shouldn't be taken seriously until we see more focus, physicality, and less laughing on the sidelines when trailing by double digits.
Injury updates
Texas A&M is slated to enter next week with few to no health issues beyond the players out for the year. After the loss to Alabama, the Aggies did not sustain any injuries, but, like every team, players on both sides of the ball, especially the starters, are banged up and need a full two weeks of rest.
Is Mike Elko on the hot seat?
The short answer? No. However, his seat is warming up, and based on his recent comment regarding the Aggies' No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, the third-year head coach is desperate to keep all 25 commits after losing four-star linebacker Aston Whiteside, who flipped to Miami.
Aggies Wire detailed Mike Elko's contract after he signed his massive extension late last year, and compared it to former coach Jimbo Fisher's disastrous deal; Texas A&M is somewhat protected if the Aggies choose to move on from Elko over the next two seasons.
Any momentum before facing South Carolina?
Texas A&M's 31-20 road loss to Alabama was a tale of two halves: Marcel Reed's early interception issues also included two impressive touchdown drives, but outside of one successful drive in the second half, the Crimson Tide outscored the Aggies 14-0, while Reed failed to regain his confidence in the pocket.
Added rest should help the Aggies on the road, but knowing Marcel Reed will continue as the starter does not inspire confidence; meanwhile, Texas A&M's defense has been hot and cold all season and will now face physical South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers, one of the more unpredictable quarterbacks in the country.
Texas A&M faces South Carolina in Columbia on Nov. 7. Kickoff is 2:00 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPN.
