The Oklahoma Sooners and the No. 1 Texas Longhorns renew the greatest rivalry in North American sports on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. The game has huge implications for the Sooners, who are 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in SEC play.
Oklahoma struggled their last time out against the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs in a 41-13 loss in Athens. Once a team considered a shoo-in for the College Football Playoff is fighting for its playoff life before the midpoint of the season.
Texas is 4-0 on the year and 1-0 in SEC play. The Longhorns earned a huge come from behind win over then No. 1 Ohio State back in Week 2. To open SEC play, Texas held on for a 20-17 win over the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville.
This year's Red River Showdown features a pair of quarterbacks that aren't necessarily living up to the preseason buzz. John Mateer and Arch Manning have struggled to protect the football. What's helped the Texas engine go is a significantly better running game than the Sooners'. While the Longhorns rank No. 85 in the nation, they average 147.3 rushing yards per game, while Oklahoma ranks No. 131 at just 99 yards per game on the ground.
That puts a lot more pressure on Mateer to find some success through the air this week against the Texas defense. And that could spell trouble. The Longhorns are allowing quarterbacks to complete only 59.5% of their passes this season for 171.8 passing yards per game, No. 26 in the nation.

Oklahoma vs. Texas predictions, picks, odds
Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Saturday, October 9
- Spread: Texas by 7 1/2
- Over/under: 39 1/2
- Moneyline: Oklahoma plus-260, Texas minus-325
- Prediction: The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns are a combined 2-6 against the spread in 2026. Oklahoma's cover came way back in Week 1 against UTEP. The offense has been a far cry from that 51-point outburst. It's a rivalry game, so things could get weird, but it's hard to trust Oklahoma's offense to score a touchdown, let alone keep within a touchdown against the No. 1 team in the nation. The Sooners' defense can keep it close, but can the offense take advantage and get the win as a touchdown underdog. - Longhorns minus the points and take the under.
