In his second year with Utah, Devon Dampier has been electric, generating over 250 yards of offense per game en route to a 5-0 start.

His consistency in the pocket has helped the Utes march down the field at a blistering pace, leading an offense that ranks in the top 40 in Success Rate, Explosiveness, Finishing Drives and Havoc Allowed.

Not only has Dampier been able to find success through the air, but he’s also lethal with his legs when he gets out in the open field, averaging four yards per carry.

His dual threat abilities force opposing linebackers to creep up to the edge to neutralize his legs, freeing up more space on the back end for his pass catchers to exploit.

While opposing front sevens had their hands full with Dampier, Wayshawn Parker has also entered a groove, averaging nearly 100 rushing yards per game while rattling off 7.6 yards per carry.

With two productive ball carriers in the backfield, the Utes have climbed to the top of the board in Rush Success Rate and PPA, giving them the versatility they need to light up the scoreboard.

While the offense has hogged the spotlight, Utah has been just as productive on defense, entering Week 7 ranked eighth in Defensive Success Rate, 13th in Points per Opportunity and 23rd in Havoc.

Just when it looked like Colorado was going to take Texas Tech the distance, the Red Raiders put up 26 unanswered points on the board, topping the Buffaloes 29-7.

Isaac Wilson’s inability to take care of the ball made it impossible for Colorado to keep pace with Texas Tech, throwing three interceptions in the second half with one of them turning into a pick six.

With Wilson and Julian Sayin both struggling under center, the Buffaloes have been unable to play at a competitive level while ranking outside the top 100 in Success Rate, Explosiveness, Finishing Drives and Havoc Allowed.

To make matters worse for Colorado, Micah Welch and JaQuail Smith have both been unable to provide a spark on the ground, limping into Saturday ranked near the bottom of the board in Rush Success Rate, PPA and Explosiveness.

On the other side of the ball, the Buffaloes have fared far better on defense while ranking in the top 40 in Success Rate and in Havoc.

Until the offense is able to round back into form, the defense will need to continue playing at a high level on a weekly basis to help reduce the amount of variance in the contests.

Unfortunately for Colorado, negative regression is looming large over the defense against Utah, especially with the secondary struggling to hold its assignments in front of the sticks.

The defense ranks 127th in Defensive Pass Play Explosiveness. With the Buffaloes forced to spy their linebackers, the corners will be left on islands, making it easier for the Utes to create space in the open field.

Should the Buffaloes anchor their linebackers in coverage, giving the corners the support they need to help create disruptions, the middle of the defense will be vulnerable. This will widen the width of Parker’s running lanes, leading to an uptick in explosive plays on the ground.

Once behind, matching the Utes output and breaking through a defense that holds opponents to minimal gains will be a tall task for Wilson, keeping Colorado comfortably behind the sticks.

Barring a sudden turnaround on offense, it’s tough to envision how Colorado will stay within the number while the defense fights to keep Utah out of scoring position.

Place a wager on Utah to cover the spread at no higher than -17 with intentions of adding more to your position should the Utes steam down to a flat -14 before kickoff.

Pick: Utah -15.5 (-112, FanDuel)
