A 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky in Week 6 puts LSU football at 4-2 heading into another tough stretch of SEC games. Head coach Lane Kiffin and the Tigers play host on Saturday to No. 19 Mississippi State, which will be fresh off a bye week.
Despite the crushing loss, LSU remains in the No. 8 spot on ESPN's football power index (FPI) ranking with a 20.9 rating. FPI uses expected point margin vs. average opponent on a neutral field to measure a team's true strength on a net points scale.
LSU put on one of its best offensive showings of the season in Lexington, despite turning the ball over twice. Quarterback Sam Leavitt threw for two scores in the first half, then rushed for a touchdown in overtime. He completed 73.5% of his passes for 275 yards.
Georgia (28.7), Alabama (26.6) and Texas (25.5) join the Tigers in the FPI top 10. The Bulldogs left Tuscaloosa with a win in Week 6, which boosted the Crimson Tide's standing by one spot to No. 5 on the FPI list. The Longhorns fell two spots to No. 6 after losing to Oklahoma.
