Taevion Swint will miss Saturday's anticipated matchup against the No. 2 BYU Cougars with an undisclosed injury, per UCF's Wednesday injury report.
The UCF Knights' running back room and special teams unit take a hit. Swint's rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries, and returned seven kickoffs for 209 yards.
He's a reliable second option to Duke Watson. UCF leans on his electrifying speed to bounce runs outside and diversify its attack when Watson is contained.
Swint scored his second career touchdown in the Knights' Big 12 home opener against a stout TCU Horned Frogs run defense.
Losing the redshirt freshman puts more pressure on Watson to carry the load, and on Landen Chambers to step up when he gets snaps.
BYU is the third-best rushing defense in the Big 12, allowing 86.7 yards per game. The rushing attack is UCF's bread and butter, relying on its trio to make big plays.
Coach Scott Frost did not reveal Swint's injury or when it occurred, leaving a cloud of uncertainty for future availability. Swint was forced to redshirt last season after sustaining a knee injury in fall camp.
He's developed into a crucial contributor on a senior-laden roster. Coach Scott Frost said Swint is an X-factor for UCF with his speed and potential to make big plays.
Swint rushed for 1,778 yards and 25 touchdowns in his senior season, leading Osceola High School to the state championship game. He rushed for over 100 yards 23 times in his high school career.
The Cougars also enter Orlando banged up. Star running back LJ Martin will miss the matchup with a lower-body and ankle injury.
Martin sustained the injury against TCU on Oct. 3, and was ruled out for four to six weeks.
UCF will face its toughest challenge this season without a rising running back in Swint. BYU is the highest-ranked program to visit Acrisure Bounce House since the No. 6 Texas Longhorns in 2007.
The Knights aim to break a two-game losing streak, plagued by late second-half collapses, and avenge last year's season-ending loss.
The Cougars scored 41 points after their opponent scored 14 unanswered points in the first quarter. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw for 289 yards and one touchdown, and Martin rushed for 95 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.
Swint is key to UCF's offensive attack, and if he's expected to miss multiple weeks, the team is losing a quality second option behind Watson.
