Alonza Barnett III's return will have to wait another week, as the UCF Knights will start Keyone Jenkins against No. 2 BYU on Saturday, per ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Barnett's hamstring injury has now sidelined him for five straight games. Coach Scott Frost said the star transfer is making "really good progress" on his way back to the field.
The redshirt senior has been active on the sidelines, encouraging and coaching his teammates weekly. He's doing the same activities he did during spring camp when the coaching staff kept him out of practice.
UCF took a cautious approach to Barnett's lingering injuries, prioritizing his health. The James Madison transfer said he took mental reps on the sidelines, watching the wide receivers reach the top of their route and how they broke out of it.
His return is on the horizon, but for now, Jenkins continues to hold down the fort.
The senior has improved in every start since taking over for his teammate. He had a rocky start against the Georgia State Panthers, throwing for 86 yards and one passing touchdown, and added two rushing touchdowns.
Frost and offensive coordinator Steve Cooper adjusted their play calling to Jenkins' strengths after his Week 3 performance. They prioritized short and intermediate passes to get the ball out of hands quickly.
Their adjustment worked, and Jenkins took off.
He made program history in UCF's Big 12 home opener against the TCU Horned Frogs. Jenkins completed 19-for-20 passes (95% completion rate), breaking McKenzie Milton's previous record of 92.5%.
The Knights' starter then recorded 200-plus yards in back-to-back games against ranked foes No. 20 Houston and No. 18 Oklahoma State. He threw a season-high four touchdowns against Oklahoma State, showing his growth as a starter.
Jenkins enters Saturday's homecoming game with hardened experience. He's no longer a backup thrust into a starting role; he's grown into a quarterback who can command the offense with precision and compete against the Big 12's most talented rosters.
UCF will host No. 2 BYU at Acrisure Bounce House. It's the highest-ranked opponent to visit Orlando.
BYU upset then-No. 2 Notre Dame last Saturday and claimed its spot. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw for 224 yards, one touchdown and one interception; he also added 45 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.
The Knights face their toughest challenge since 2009, when they lost 35-3 to the No. 2 Texas Longhorns at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium.
