The Michigan Wolverines suffered a brutal loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines allowed 13 unanswered points, aided by three turnovers in the game. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, head coach Kyle Whittingham does not have a lot of answers.
During his postgame press conference, Whittingham admitted that he is still trying to figure out this team’s identity as he made it clear that this has been the biggest challenge he’s ever faced in his four decades as a coach.
Michigan’s Struggles
Saturday’s loss to Minnesota brings Michigan’s record to 3-2 on the season, but things have been a little less optimistic than even the record indicates.
One of Michigan’s wins came in controversial fashion against the Western Michigan Broncos as the FBS Oversight Committee essentially admitted that Western Michigan should have won the game but stated that the official result cannot be changed. Michigan went on to beat Oklahoma the following week, but that win has lost a lot of its luster with Oklahoma having its own struggles. The only other win came against UTEP, which has lost eight consecutive games to FBS opponents.
Now, Michigan has lost back-to-back games as the Wolverines seem to have no consistent answers on offense.
Whittingham Addresses Struggles
Following Saturday’s loss, Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham was asked if he knows what this team is. Somewhat surprisingly, he didn’t have a confident response.
“I’m still trying to figure that out. I’ve been in this profession 40-some years, and this is the biggest challenge I’ve had,” he said after the game via Clayton Sayfie. “I promise you we’re going to figure it out.”
Whittingham is in his first season as the head coach of Michigan after he spent the previous 21 seasons at the head coach of the Utah Utes, where he served as an assistant coach for more than a decade before that.
