‘There Might Be an Injured Animal’ — Urban Meyer Warns Lincoln Riley About USC Losing Potential Recruits

Urban Meyer used to treat struggling power programs like open season on the recruiting trail. After USC’s 41-27 loss to Oregon, he thinks Lincoln Riley may have just painted the same target on Los Angeles.

The Trojans are still 4-1 and ranked No. 18, so nobody is shoveling dirt on the season yet. Meyer sees enough noise around Riley’s job and USC’s direction to know exactly what rival recruiters are going to do with it.

Urban Meyer Says Rival Coaches Should Smell Opportunity at USC

“Okay, the injured animal is this,” Meyer said on “The Triple Option.”

Meyer reached back to his Ohio State days to explain the phrase. When Texas was struggling, he sent four coaches into the state and said the Buckeyes landed the top three Texas players in a single recruiting cycle. He used a similar approach in Georgia before Kirby Smart took over.

“Right now, there might be an injured animal in Los Angeles, boys, and that’s USC,” Meyer said. “They’re injured.”

That warning hits a sensitive spot because recruiting has been one of Riley’s biggest recent wins. USC signed the nation’s No. 1 class in 2026, and its 2027 class has been built around 14 commitments, including five-star prospects Honor Fa’alave-Johnson and Mekai Brown.

Riley has also beaten Oregon head-to-head on the trail. Earlier this year, USCflipped Drew Fielder, a four-star offensive tackle who had been committed to the Ducks.

No USC decommitment was part of Meyer’s comments. His point centered on what happens when rival staffs smell uncertainty around a coach and start asking recruits whether the guy who signed them will still be there when they arrive.

Lincoln Riley Has To Keep the Noise From Reaching Recruiting

The frustrating part for USC is that the roster has shown real signs of progress.

Even after the Oregon loss, the Trojans sit No. 3 nationally in PFN’s Offense Impact Rankings. Jayden Maiava threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns against the Ducks, and USC generated 446 total yards.

The final score still reopened every old Riley argument. USC has yet to reach the College Football Playoff during his tenure, and the 41-27 loss was the Trojans’ fifth straight defeat against Oregon.

Washington comes to the Coliseum on Saturday, giving Riley an immediate chance to quiet some of the conversation. A win will not make opposing recruiters disappear, but another ugly afternoon would hand them fresh material.

Meyer spent years turning somebody else’s instability into Ohio State’s recruiting opportunity.

He knows exactly what an “injured animal” looks like because he used to be the guy hunting it.
