Cincinnati hosted Texas Tech with the type of intensity that allowed the matchup to live up to the hostility that linked the two programs during the offseason.
It had been five years since the Bearcats beat a top-10 team before Cincinnati ran away to a 37-24 win over the No. 8-ranked Red Raiders at Nippert Stadium on Saturday.
With Will Hammond under center instead of Brendan Sorsby, a late touchdown allowed Texas Tech to avoid being held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since 2021.
The loss is Texas Tech's first in its seventh game of the season, just as was the case last season before the Red Raiders won their first Big 12 title.
Hammond committed two of the Red Raiders' three turnovers and threw for 227 yards on 24/37 through the air.
Cincinnati quarterback JC French IV threw his first two interceptions of the season - with Tech returning one for its nation-leading fifth pick-six - but also threw four touchdown passes.
The Bearcats' electric run game got off to a slow start but ended with 257 yards against one of the best run defenses.
We recap the action below as the Bearcats improve to 5-2 (2-2) and the Red Raiders fall to 6-1 (3-1).

First Quarter - Run defense stepped up early, 'No Stone Zone' saw two Harrington field goals
Hammond converted a 4th-and-1 try on the Red Raiders' first possession, but he was stripped and the defense recovered the fumble. Cincinnati turned the field position into a field goal and a 3-0 lead.
Tech converted another short fourth-down conversion, then an intentional grounding penalty pushed the offense back, and Stone Harrington kicked a field goal to tie the game.
After Texas Tech's next offensive series was extended by an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Bearcats, a false start by right guard Jordan Church on fourth down sent Harrington back out for a 48-yard field goal that gave the Red Raiders a 6-3 lead.
Cincinnati, a top-five ground attack among Power 4 teams at over 230 yards per game, had just six yards rushing in the first quarter. The Red Raiders have given up 82 rushing yards per game entering Week 8, which ranks fifth in the FBS.
Texas Tech linemen Adam Trick and AJ Holmes each recorded sacks of French IV to plague the Bearcats' pass attack while the run game stalled.
Second Quarter - Bearcats score 21 straight as Tech offense struggles
The Bearcats' first drive of the second quarter found the end zone with French IV's short touchdown pass ending a 10-play drive. Cincinnati took a 10-6 lead as the run game began to find a rhythm.
Cincinnati's defense also found success. Hammond was sacked as the Red Raiders' offense was inconsistent throughout the first half, which had been a theme this season before last week's blowout win over Arizona State.
With under two minutes to go in the half, French IV found Malachi Henry in the back of the end zone for another Cincinnati touchdown. The 17-6 score became the largest deficit of the year for the Red Raiders.
Hammond was intercepted on a one-handed circus catch by Cincinnati safety MJ Cannon. One play later, Cole Tabb rushed for a gain of 51 yards to set the Bearcats up in scoring position.
French IV's 22-yard scramble led Cincinnati's third consecutive touchdown drive of the quarter to storm to a 24-6 lead.

Third Quarter - Momentum see-saws, Bearcats pad their lead late
Texas Tech moved down the field for 11 plays to begin the second half, but once again settled for a Harrington field goal. Hammond appeared to have Coy Eakin open down the right sideline, but the pass came a beat late and was broken up at the 5-yard line.
The Red Raiders got an interception from Peyton Morgan that was returned for a touchdown. The hit that forced the turnover was a targeting call on cornerback Brice Pollock, but the flag was picked up after review. Tech's 2-point conversion was no good, making the score 24-15, Cincinnati.
Texas Tech forced its second straight turnover with cornerback Amier Boyd picking off French IV, but it couldn't lead to points. Harrington's 38-yarder was wide left.
Cincinnati took advantage of Tech's missed opportunity with French IV throwing his fourth touchdown pass of the day. Larenzo Fenner's 17-yard score put the Bearcats up 31-15 in the final minute of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter - Red Raiders' red zone issues lead to Cincinnati runaway
Texas Tech punter Will Karroll booted another uncharacteristically short punt, and an alignment penalty pre-snap, the Red Raiders' ninth of the game. The Red Raiders caught a break, however, due to an illegal bat by the coverage team.
Running back J'Koby Williams sprinted for a gain of 42 yards to get Tech into Bearcat territory. Facing 4th-and-2 from the 12-yard line, Hammond was pushed across the line to gain, but pre-snap penalties and formation issues forced Tech to take a short field goal that brought the deficit to 31-18.
Tabb pierced through the Texas Tech defense to put the nail in the coffin, a 58-yard rushing touchdown with just over six minutes left. The failed 2-point conversion made it 37-18.
The Red Raiders' next offensive series was capped by a fumble by Eakin and recovered by the defense with 4:43 to go.
Later on, Quinten Joyner rushed in for Texas Tech's first touchdown with 59 seconds left in the game.
The Red Raiders play Arizona at Galaxy Stadium at 11 a.m. on Halloween.
Cincinnati hosts No. 10 Utah at 2:45 p.m. CT.
