Arch Manning finally had a chance to get away from the weekly grind of college football. He still ended up at a football game.

Just not the kind anyone might have expected.

Manning and the Texas Longhorns entered their bye week after escaping Knoxville with a 20-17 victory over Tennessee, moving Texas to 4-0. For Manning, Monday presented a rare opportunity to spend an evening without preparing for an upcoming Saturday opponent.

So the Texas quarterback went to a middle school football game in Austin. Tyler Horka shared the story Wednesday, noting that Manning attended the game during Texas’ bye week and helped “make it an unforgettable night” for the young players involved.

It’s a small gesture compared to what Manning normally does on Saturdays.

For the kids who got to meet one of college football’s biggest stars, it was anything but small.

Arch Manning Spends Bye Week Around Football

There is almost nowhere Manning can go without attracting attention. That comes with being the starting quarterback at Texas.

It especially comes with being a Manning.

Arch has spent virtually his entire football life surrounded by enormous expectations because of his famous last name, yet moments like Monday’s provide a different glimpse of the person behind one of the most recognizable names in college sports.

There was no SEC defense chasing him. No national television audience. No College Football Playoff debate.

Just a group of young football players getting a chance to spend part of their night around the Texas quarterback.

It’s also fitting that Manning would spend part of his break around younger players.

Long before the enormous recruiting rankings, the Texas uniform and the national attention, Manning was once a middle school football player himself.

Texas Gets Brief Break Before Rivalry Game

Manning and the Longhorns probably needed the break. Texas remained unbeaten with its 20-17 victory at Tennessee, but it wasn’t easy.

The Longhorns were penalized 11 times for 115 yards and had to lean heavily on their defense. Texas recorded 10 sacks in the victory, including five from Colin Simmons.

Manning and the offense, meanwhile, have plenty to work on during the open week. There won’t be much time to ease back into things afterward.

Texas’ next game comes against Oklahoma, meaning the Red River Rivalry awaits immediately after the bye.

There will be plenty of pressure, attention and noise surrounding Manning when that week arrives.

For at least one Monday night, however, Manning used his rare time away from playing football to watch some kids play it instead. And for the young athletes who saw the Texas quarterback show up at their game, it’s probably a Monday night they won’t forget anytime soon.
