It's now or never for Texas A&M (4-3, 1-3 SEC) to prove that, despite already losing three games in SEC play against ranked opponents, third-year coach Mike Elko's roster is much too talented not to compete over the next six weeks of regular season play, starting with No. 13 Alabama (5-2, 2-2 SEC) in Tuscaloosa on Saturday afternoon.
Texas A&M hasn't faced the Crimson Tide since the 2023 season, during Jimbo Fisher's final year as the Aggies' head coach, and has defeated the college football juggernauts only twice, in 2012 and 2021. However, this season is different: Alabama has lost consecutive games to Georgia and Tennessee, and sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell threw for under 200 yards in both losses.
The Aggies' lone win in SEC play came against Arkansas at home, led by an elite rushing attack that was replicated during last Saturday's 41-0 shutout win over The Citadel, as the rise of freshman running back KJ Edwards has provided us a sneak peek into the future, but most importantly, provides the offense a jolt of speed and athleticism.
For Texas A&M to have any legitimate shot at an upset, it starts in the trenches: it needs to run the ball well, and starting quarterback Marcel Reed must hit his high-percentage throws and keep using his legs when things break down in the pocket.
Texas A&M's 10th-ranked pass defense and anemic pass rush will face an Alabama offensive line that allows three sacks per game, giving the Aggies a chance to keep things close into the fourth quarter.
