Tennessee senior DeSean Bishop earned two national weekly award honors on Tuesday following his standout performance in the Volunteers' Third Saturday in October rivalry win over No. 6/7 Alabama last Saturday.
The Knoxville native was named the Doak Walker Award National Running Back of the Week and the Burlsworth Trophy Walk-On of the Week after powering UT to a dominating 26-10 victory over the Crimson Tide.
Bishop finished the game with 32 carries for 159 yards and two touchdowns, surpassing the100-yard mark for the third consecutive game. He was especially effective in the second half with 95 of his rushing yards coming after the break, including a powerful 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and another 5-yard score to cap an historic, 15-play, 72-yard drive that spanned 9:32 in the fourth quarter and all but put the game away.
This came against an Alabama team that was allowing just 99.8 yards per game rushing this season. According to PFF, 118 of Bishop's 159 yards came after contact, and he forced 13 missed tackles. With his performance, Bishop moved into fifth place on Tennessee's career rushing touchdowns list, surpassing Stanley Morgan (1973-76) and increasing his career total to 29 during his time in Knoxville.
Bishop now leads the nation in second-half rushing yards (517) and rushing touchdowns (8), as well.
Named after Doak Walker, a legendary figure in college football and the NFL, the Doak Walker Award presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum has honored the nation's top running back since 1990. Since 2022, the award has also recognized a national running back of the week. A select 20-person committee from the award's full voting body of media members and past winners chooses each weekly recipient.
The Burlsworth Trophy is named in honor of former Arkansas All-American Brandon Burlsworth and is awarded annually to the top player in college football who is a walk-on or began their career as a walk-on. Each week during the regular season, the Burlsworth Trophy selects a Walk-On of the Week. Bishop finished as was a semifinalist for last year's Burlsworth Trophy.
