Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 12 five times and have a 2-3 record.

In 1992, Tennessee defeated Georgia, 35-31, at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, in the first SEC East division game.

Tennessee trailed at halftime, 17-13. The Vols scored a winning touchdown on a 3-yard run by quarterback Heath Shuler with 50 seconds remaining in the contest.

He also completed 12-of-22 passing attempts for 152 yards and one interception. Shuler was the Vols' leading rusher. He totaled 81 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 19 attempts. James Stewart also scored one rushing touchdown for Tennessee.

Craig Faulkner led Tennessee in receiving yards (86) on six receptions.

The Vols first played on Sept. 12 in 1981, losing to USC, 43-7, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California.

On this date in 1987, Tennessee defeated Mississippi State, 38-10. Tennessee lost to UCLA, 19-15, on Sept. 12, 2009.

The Vols last played on Sept. 12 in 2015, when they lost a double-overtime game to Oklahoma, 31-24, at Neyland Stadium.
