College football Week 4 delivered on its promise, with a stacked slate of games that started with the Texas Longhorns surviving in Tennessee and finished with PJ Fleck covering himself in blood and glory. But what did the results of this weekend mean?

The College Football Playoff first-round games will once again be held on campus and aren’t technically classified as bowl games. But for readers wondering where their favorite team ranks in our college football bowl projections, the Boise State Broncos, Florida Gators, LSU Tigers, and Oregon Ducks are the teams to fall by the wayside before the quarterfinals.

The BYU Cougars were on a bye in Week 4, but events around them strengthened their standing as a potential Big 12 champion. Kalani Sitake’s team has a 28.7% chance of winning the Big 12 and a 40.0% shot at making the playoff. With the Texas Tech Red Raiders continuing to struggle on offense behind turnover machine Will Hammond, the Cougars are well-positioned to make a run at the title and a playoff berth.

The difference between a Big 12 title win giving the Cougars a first-round bye and them having to play an extra game could be the regular-season matchup with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. One of the biggest games of the season will significantly shape the makeup of the playoff bracket, but as you can see from our college football bowl projections, there is a path for both teams.

Despite a closer-than-expected encounter with the Northwestern Wildcats on Friday night, the Indiana Hoosiers are on a collision course with the College Football Playoff once more.
